Hi all,
I am currently running vanilla Ubuntu 22.04, but every time the laptop
reboots, which I will admit is not often, I spend more time on fixing my
sound devices than I feel should be needed. This is driving me nuts!
What would you suggest I do?
Fedora doesn't want to talk in the installer, why I have no idea. I
tried upgrading from a Fedora 35 install, but it stopped talking as well.
I've tried installing Arch, but for some reason the Arch installer also
doesn't want to talk, and, yes, I know how it's suppose to be done. It
use to talk just fine on my system, but now?
OpenSUSE's installer is inaccessible, and being married to a blind lady,
I don't have eyeballs to assist.
After re-installing Slint a few days ago, something broke when I updated
the system to the point that I couldn't boot it at all.
Now you understand why I feel like I'm in a bit of a pickle here. I
refuse to re-install Windows on this machine, I really don't want to
take a dive out the nearest window, which would be the result of me
doing that.
Have mercy on this dumb South African and help me out of my misery!

I just tried Fedora Workstation 36, and found that the installer in fact
is not speaking. However, it does speak using the Fedora-MATE-Compiz
spin. I know I just saw an update to the anaconda stuff I believe about
2 or 3 days ago that may have fixed it for everyone, but I am certain
that the installer is talking on the MATE spin I downloaded about 15
minutes ago. Your biggest issue will be a pitch problem with
speech-dispatcher's defaults that make things sound really high at
times. But this is fixed, at least in Orca with Fedora-MATE-Compiz 36,
by changing the speech synthesizer in the voice tab from "default speech
synthesizer" to espeak-ng. Also, your alt+super+s keyboard shortcut to
turn on Orca is disabled by default in MATE, so you will want to press
alt+f2 and enter orca in the run window. Hope this helps.

My suggestion would be to run a slightly older version of whatever Linux
you prefer.
I never upgrade just because I can.
Just make sure you do your security updates.
I am not saying you should'nt play though, just do it on another partition
or another machine if you have one.

In general, Linux plays nicely with the CLI and thus with shell scripts. So, here's a possible approach:
- Using script(1), record all of the restoration work.
- edit the typescript file into a shell script (eg, soundfix)
- use soundfix to restore the sound, etc.
Here is a sample script session:
=====
$ script
Script started, output file is typescript
-2- [07:11 Mon May 23] ~
$ date
Mon May 23 07:11:16 PDT 2022
-2- [07:11 Mon May 23] ~
$ exit
exit
Script done, output file is typescript
=====
The typescript file will look something like this:
=====
$ cat typescript
Script started on Mon May 23 07:11:11 2022
-2- [07:11 Mon May 23] ~
$ date
Mon May 23 07:11:16 PDT 2022
-2- [07:11 Mon May 23] ~
$ exit
exit
=====

I second what Rich is saying. I was about to make the same suggestion. You
can also hook your custom script into startup so that it runs as soon as
possible when the machine is ready for it.

Be VERY cautious about what you put in the restoration script, especially if it is run as a startup script. In particular, you don't want it to trash an already working configuration.

I'll redownload Fedora and see if it works.
I'd prefer vanilla Fedora with Gnome, since that's the way the Gnome
devs intended Gnome, as well as the fact that Fedora with Gnome is the
flagship.

Looks like your best bet will be to download the MATE spin and then
install GNOME. The version I had already downloaded and tested with the
non-speaking installer is the same version 36-1.5currently on the
website. The MATE version also says 36-1.5, but its installer speaks,
and you should actually be able to convert it to standard Fedora
Workstation through dnf. It seems the packages you need will be
fedora-release-workstation, fedora-release-identity-workstation,
fedora-workstation-backgrounds and fedora-workstation-repositories.
Either that or just install the GNOME desktop environment over your MATE
install and change your default session on the display manager screen.

Hi,
Thanks for this one, I certainly will give it a go. I cannot say that I dislike Mate, to the contrary, I like it just fine. I've just never seen Gnome this responsive before, and I really, really enjoy using it now.

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to ask, did anyone else notice Ubuntu Mate 22.04 messing
audio devices on startup?
I'm just in a transit process, where I have installed the new system
into a virtual machine to see whether it's okay, so I could install it
on my laptop afterwards.
I've been using the VM from time to time, and I didn't observe any
audio-related problems.
That's why this thread surprised me a bit.
Also, regarding Gnome, does the Fedora version of Gnome work better than
the Ubuntu-one?
I've tried the main version of Ubuntu as well, just to see how it's
doing, and it weren't usable much, even less than it used to be due to
the problems with the caps-lock key.
Best regards

You have to remember that virtual machines are heavily dependent on the host. So just because you don't see hardware problems in a vm doesn't mean you won't see them on bare metal.

Hi,
I flashed Fedora Mate-compiz 36 to a drive, booted it up, used alt+f2 and typed orca. Nothing, no speech, nor Braille.
Thus, I'm stuck.

Hi!
Can it be a hardware issue maybe?
Just thinking here.
Not sure though what that hardware issue could be.
Maybe a memory or bios issue.

Hi!
To know, we need to know more: the exact steps you follow, when the issue occur,
and what goes wrong exactly.
Did you check the integrity of the ISO you downloaded?

I don't think so, almost every other distro with a talking installer
works just fine.
I have just successfully re-installed Slint without any issues what so ever.
I don't know why my previous Slint install broke, but this one seems to
be fine, for now. We'll see.
