WRT line editors vs visual ones, note that nvi and vim at least, and
perhaps the other vi clones, support line mode. In the case of nvi,
and vim, if called ex they will operate a la the original ex.
As far as I know, nvi's `colon mode' supports all ex commands.
(As a hard core (sighted) emacs user, when I first was forced to use
vi, I insisted in running it as ex in protest of the `insert mode' vs.
`visual mode' distinction. :)
