emacspeak accent driver and chaging the speech rate

Hi all
Is anyone else using the accent driver for emacspeak?
I'm having a problem trying to change the speech rate.  As far as i can tell from the manual, to change the speech rate in emacspeak, I do ctrl-e d r, then type in a new value. hit enter. and it should change.
I type in the new value, hit enter and the rate doesn't change at all.
am I missing something obvious here?

Nick -

I'm glad to hear somebody is trying out the Accent server, at least.
(I don't have an Accent here, but I have worked on speech servers for
the Double Talk and BnS.)  

You can help the debugging by providing a little more information.

Most importantly, what device are you using -- an actual Accent, or
something that claims Accent compatibility?  What model and firmware
revision?  

Also, which version of the speech server software are you using?
(Admittedly, I think there has been only one version announced
publically.)  

What version of Emacspeak are you using?  I believe the current Accent
server works only with Emacspeak 7.0.

Then, try changing the speech rate from the command line.  The Accent
rate command looks like \033RB, where the first part is the octal code
for an escape character and the "B" is a code for the desired speed.
Legal codes include at least these: 8 9 A B C D E F G H.  Assuming you
are running bash as your shell, I believe you can send text to your
device like this:

echo $'this is a test\r' >/dev/ttyS2

You should be able to test the rate commands with something like this:

echo $'initial rate speech \033R9 speech with rate set to nine \033RE
speech with rate set to echo \033RH speech with rate set to hotel' >/dev/ttyS2

Let us know what happens.

Whare can I get a copy of imac speak?  Will it support a doubletalk?

Emacspeak does support the DoubleTalk synthesizers.

If you are interested in Emacspeak, please look at my Emacspeak_HOWTO.

You need the basic Emacspeak package (by T. V. Raman).  The latest
version is emacspeak-8.0.tar.gz

For the DoubleTalk, you also need my DoubleTalk speech server package.
The latest version is emacspeak-dt-tcl-1.2.tar.gz.

If you have an internal DoubleTalk (that is, a DoubleTalk PC), you
also need my Linux device driver.  The latest version is
dtlk-1.12.tar.gz.

If you have a Red Hat system, get these .rpm files:
   emacspeak-8.0-1.i386.rpm
   emacspeak-dt-1.2-1.i386.rpm

If you have a Debian system, get these .deb files:
   emacspeak_8.0-2_all.deb
   emacspeak-dt-tcl_1.2-1_all.deb
   dtlk_1.12-2_i386.deb

All these are available from ftp://leb.net/pub/blinux/, and most are
also available from my web site http://www.mv.com/ipusers/vanzandt.
