Hi,
Forgive me if this has ben covered here before, but I am interested in
doing a Redhat 5.1 installation using a PC as a terminal - I have done
this with Slackware many times before by just running agetty from the
console after logging in as root, but Redhat installations seem to hide
more of the command line from their users; are totally menue driven all
the way through.
Any ideas on how to do this are greatly appreciated - Thank you for your
time.

use kickstart is the first idea.
(i've seen some auto installing things for redhat but dont have urls
to hand. you might be ablee to find if the list archives on
www.redhat.com are working.)

You cannot do RedHat install using the PC as a terminal, but you might
be able to do the quikstart thing. The first disk of the RedHat boot
disks is actually a DOS disk so you can read whats there to check out
what I am saying. There is a hidden parameter at boot time and if you
enter it and give it the file name, (I forget how you give it the file
name), then it can install by itself, but I don't think this is very
satisfactory because there is no feedback at all.

I tried to do this when I was installing redhat in August but with no
success. I tried hacking the dos installation diskette but it was
beyond my limited ability. I had to get someone to read the screen for
me while I was installing redhat.
It is easy to install agetty after redhat is installed. However,
agetty was not included in the redhat 5.1 distribution I had so I had
to copy it from my old slackware disk.
You can also just pretty much accept the defaults when installing
redhat and then configure things and load or remove packages when you
have your dos terminal up.
It is unfortunate that there is not an option to get the installation
on a terminal since it is text based and there should not be a problem
with this. If anyone here has any influence in the redhat camp maybe
an approach could be made to them about this.
