Linux flavor recommendations?

[Linux for blind general discussion]

    Hi all,

I'm just trying to get into Linux in general, and have been doing some 
reading about OSes.

I've been reading a lot of good things about fedora, so my plan was to 
try it out in a VM before I do anything else.

Trouble is, the media writer util doesn't seem to be accessible on 
windows with NVDA at all, so I'm just curious if fedora's still an 
option for blind folks?

Or, even better and I know this is quite a broad topic, but if anyone 
has any OS recommendations that they think work particularly well, then 
please do let me know!

I've heard good things about arch, which is the second one on my list if 
you will, any thoughts?

Howdy,

Maybe there is no need to write it to disk. Any modern VM tool can mount from ISO directly. What VM are you using?

Yea fedora is a good choice i also used it for many years without big trouble.

Ah... found the isos, they were right at the bottom of the page so will 
try one and see what results I get...

The main questions are : what do you want to do with Linux ? Do you want 
to configure all the stuff yourself by command-line or to use a GUI like 
in Windows ? Do you want to spend your time in configuration or in use 
for the first steps ?

You probably want to point your virtualization software directly at the 
ISO file for whatever distro you choose. You don't need to write it to a 
disk first.

I've found the accessibility in the latest version of debian to be 
really good. It's worth considering. I use ubuntu in my job and that has 
been fine too.

Mark P here,
I can give you some to try.  Arch wouldn't be my first choice, as it's hard as I dunno what to set up.  If you can get the debian met install to work
for you, that's an option, vinux is another, and ubuntu mate, providing you can have better luck getting orca to talk than I did.
There are more, but get your way around those and I'll give you more when you're ready.

Those are two good choices except for one problem with Fedora. There's
no one packaging kernel staging modules these days, and that leaves you
doing your own work to compile Speakup for each new kernel.

I understand Vinux is moving to Fedora, which would obviate the above
issue. I'm thrilled that's happening, because Fedora is a very good
environment in many, many ways. I still run it on my server, where I
have no use for Speakup as all my access i over ssh.

The above reason prompted me to leave Fedora for Arch something over a
year ago.
