Hello Mike,
if what you want is listen to the ebook, just get the application ebook-speaker.
Its usage is very simple, just type in mate-terminal:
ebook-speaker <bookname>.epub
Maybe in Ubuntu the command has a capital B like this:
eBook-speaker <bookname>.epub
Caveat: the applications (re)write at each start the file ~/.eBook-speaker.xml
with your TTS settings, including a "fallback" command using espeak, that is
supposed to include your current language as a two letters code like en or fr.
But currently only the LC_ALL environment variable is looked at.
So to actually hear the book you should set LC_ALL in the command.
for instance type:
LC_ALL=en_US.utf8 ebook-speaker <bookname>.epub
or if the command name includes a capital B:
LC_ALL=en_US.utf8 eBook-speaker <bookname>.epub
