since I've seem some talk here about hardware synths, I've got an old artic transport that I'd like to get working. I'd be using it in the console with vinux and speechd-up
Where could I find drivers if I'd even need them. Basically, how would I set it up once I have it connected.
Thanks. I'll have my serial cable tomorrow hopefully, but definitely by wednesday, so would like to have some info to go on by then.

Speechd-up is for software speech using speech-dispatcher.
Speech-dispatcher currently has no code for a hardware speech
synthesizer. Your best bet is to try to find the correct Speakup driver
for your Transport and modprobe it. I'm not familiar with the hardware
synthesizer modules in Speakup, as I only ever used ltlk I think it was
and dtk, also a guess, since it's been so long. I thought there was a
module called txp or txprt or something for the Transport, but I can't
remember if that's right, or if it had another name. To use it by
default, you would put its name on a single line in
/etc/modules-load.d/anynameatall.conf. I would suggest speakup.conf as
the filename can be anything with a .conf extension, but that helps
finding it later. This will load the correct module at boot time.

Try something like
sudo modprobe speakup_<tab>
I think all the Speakup modules now start with speakup_, someone jump in
here if I have this wrong. If I'm right, that tab at the end should list
all available Speakup modules.

Ah thanks. I was fairly sure all the modules started with speakup_ like
speakup_soft, and I did indeed recall seeing txprt somewhere, even
though I never used one. So speakup_txprt it is. Put that on a line by
itself in /etc/modules-load.d/speakup.conf and you should hear it at
boot. Just for testing, you should be able to
sudo modprobe speakup_txprt

I believe the answer is no.

Still, is there a module for the reading edge?
Thanks,
Karen
who has no Linux box with speakup to check, hence the question.

So far, I get "fatal: module speakup not found.
Don't know how that is when I'm using speakup. Darn thing. There are other messages after this one, though, so maybe there's an answer
I'll go look.

Tony Baechler here.

You first need a kernel package with the latest Speakup patches or you won't
have any hardware speech. You want the linux-image 4.10.7-2 package. Just
install it with "sudo dpkg -i linux-image*". It should work fine in Ubuntu,
but use at your own risk.

http://iavit.org/~bats/kernels/

Second, you add just this single line to /etc/modules:

speakup_txprt

Finally, you make sure there aren't other modules like speakup_soft and you
disable espeakup, speechd-up, etc from starting. You shouldn't need software
speech. Reboot and see what happens. If it doesn't work, post here. Look at
the dmesg output and see if it had an obvious problem. It should start
talking early in the boot process.

Mark Peeto here,
Toney,
Every time I try sudo dpkg -i linux-image*, it says no such file or directory. I've tried tacking the url in your message on th e end of the command, but that didn't work either. I'm probaby
doing something not quite right, but not sure what.
Sorry for the slow response. 've been out of action the last couple days. Chemo. Nuff said.

Mark Peveto here,
I'll come back in the morning and see what responses I get. I still get errors when I use dpkg -i, no matter what I do. If OS notes help, running vinux 5.1.

Tony Baechler here. I've been out of action due to bad migraines, so I
understand. The command I gave you was shorthand. You have to fill in the
full name of the .deb package, making sure you have it downloaded first. You
have to be root or use sudo. I should be better about giving the full
command with the full filename, but I assumed people would know this. Again,
as always, there is no warranty, but it should work fine with Ubuntu and
Debian derivatives.

Mark Peveto here,

Aha! Thanks for that. I'll use wget and get it tomorrow. I'd try it tonight, but i usually start fuzzing out by about 7:30 or so. Appreciate it, Toney.

Mark Peveto here, I just wanted to say publicly...Tony, thanks buddy. Artic is working perfectly in the console now. I wish I could get it to work in
the gui, but I'm thrilled with this. I also want to thank everyone for their contributions as far as answers to my questions. Much of my stuff's
probably trivial to a lot of folks, but yall helped me get this going. Thanks.

Tony Baechler here.

No thanks are necessary. I have a slight hearing loss and I don't like
software speech, especially ESpeak in particular. I'm so glad I have a
DECtalk Express, a Litetalk and a Trippletalk. I wouldn't give up hardware
speech for the world. As much as I appreciate the thanks, the real credit
goes to Samuel and the Speakup list. It has been a long road and the journey
isn't done yet, but it looks like serial support might again work with
Speakup in the latest kernels. It's just a matter of the patches being
accepted upstream and entering staging. I can't take any credit for their
work. I'm most definitely not a programmer. All I do is apply their patches
to the kernel source and compile. I ran kernel 2.6.32 for years just for
working hardware speech.

Regarding the GUI, I have bad news. I don't know of a way to use any
hardware speech. A module for Speech Dispatcher would have to be written,
but I don't think anyone has done any work in that area. I keep hoping
someone will as the main reason why I don't switch to Linux and Orca full
time is due to the lack of hardware speech. In my case, it doesn't matter
how good software speech is due to my high frequency hearing loss. Nothing
compares to having real hardware speech. If you ever find a way to get
hardware speech to work in the GUI, I would be thrilled.
