get my modem to work. I ahve a friend who has a winmodem, and an external
modem that has dos drivers is there can either of these be used in linux? I
just have an external that I can use under dos, and windows. thanks

Winmodems do not work under Linux at all, except for a few
(experimental) projects.
DOS/Windows modems should work OK.
As a good rule of thumb, if your modem is using the Hayes-
standard "AT" commands, you should be OK.

I dunno, but the Lucent Winmodem in my Thinkpad A21M works great under
Linux! If you want to see if your modem works, check out
http://www.linmodems.org
I can tell you the Lucent ones work though.

Mmmmmm... You are right (and I am wrong!). IBM has worked
really hard to make sure their laptops worked 100% under
Linux. So it is true some winmodems work correctly under
Linux.
On the other hand, I don't like "winmodems" and internal
modems at all. Winmodems take too much CPU resources for
too little functionalities. And internal modems are evil
because the only way to reset them is to turn off your
machine... <grin>
I like external, standard modems better: "ATA" commands
and serial ports are very well documented and, in case
there is a problem, you can switch off your modem
without having to stop that all important server...

Completely agree with you. I also prefer external modems. However,
since a laptop has only one serial port and I need a speech
synthesizer. .....
