which version?

I hope this message is on topic, and obviously I think it is. Is there any particular version of linux which is better to go for with regards to its accessibility and compatibility with linux access products, eg redhat, debian or slackware. thanks, saqib shaikh

hi,
all versions (they are excually called distribution) are rather fine to use.
It all depends on if you want to install yourself and how much knolidge about your hardware you have.
redhat is the most out-of-the-box like system (but I find it hard to change think because the way they put config files in is not always that straight forward)
debian is great to use and to play around with (but you need very specific knolidge about your system)
slackware and this I never used so I go with what someoen told me is easy to install yourself as blind user. They even have some installdisks with accessstuf on it standart, but there packagemanager seems to be timeconsuming.

Now before I am stockpiled under flames from redhad and slackware usersers, please don't.

jost forgot, I failed getting debian installed with a brailledisplay and had to ask sighted assistance for that.

versions of linux: that's what the version of the linux kernel is.

I heard of something called terbolinux, but I hear it's mostly x-win based.
I would probably install by modem if I could, use a dos program like telix
to connect with the other system, and cause it to answer, and do the
install, then I would assume you'd not need any sighted assistance.

This question, along with a number of others, is answered in the
blinux-list FAQ which was distributed via the list in draft form recently.
Perhaps the latest version should be made available on the web and sent to
all new subscribers when they join the list.

Hi Jason,

since about June,  the Blinux-FAQ is sent to all new blinux subscribers.
Web pages are getting better too in between. All blinux-lists are
searchable in full text using AND, OR and NOT rules.

LaTeX is a very useful document formatting system which I would highly
recommend. Be sure to use the AucTeX mode of Emacs, with Emacspeak,
when editing LaTeX files, as it provides a number of shortcuts for
entering the formatting commands, allows you to typeset files and
review any error messages that arise, and of course, as you would
expect, Emacspeak announces the LaTeX commands in a different voice to
distinguish them from the actual text.

In other words it all works beautifully.
