Yes, here is what I know about.
rip the tracks with cdparanoia, normalize with ecasound ecanormalize,
get track info with, I think, abcd, encode with lame.

Yes, the abcde ripping tool can do all of this, and is VERY
configurable. It is mostly written in bash, and uses cdparanoia. I also
believe it can do normalizing etc.

I use it all the time for ripping CDs, and would never use any other
tool.

I would like to put in a music disk,
and issue a command line program (no graphics please)
that rips the specified tracks,
converts to mp3,
adjusts the volume to a standard level (preferably in the mp3 header
rather than messing with the wave bits),
fetches artist and song info from the internet,
and stores this in the mp3.
Is it possible to do this with one or more programs out there?

Check out cdparanoia and cdcd.

These do the track ripping and the data acquisition.

I provided a braille-patched font in the debian console-tools package.
It is also available for any distribution in

http://brl.thefreecat.org/linux-brl-console.tgz

(which is about typing braille with the keyboard, but for this includes
the font you want, see the README file).

Ah, maybe that's an azerty-sm actually. It's the right alt key (i.e. the

Didn't it produce errors? Do you have a 2.6.18 kernel? Did you properly

Oops, sorry, 2.6.17 should be sufficient.

How do you type braille? alt-altgr only works with the keymaps provided
in keymaps/. If you use setbrlkeys, you need to use the "pause" key.

After setfont to brl, I couldn't read any thing on my braille display.
May I just type in braillekey and display the regular texts? Then I
translate these texts into braillefont by excute some commands or press
some keys? I just want to present some braille patterns to sighted people.
Thanks your reply!

Ah, this is another problem then (and this is what needs to be
corrected). I guess you are using latest stable brltty (3.7)?

Mmm, maybe you just need to restart brltty. Dave, can't brltty
automatically detect font change?

BTW, brltty will however not be able to display the braille patterns
on the braille display (it will show up as '?') because it is still
internally limited to 8-bit charsets. But the braille patterns should
display correctly on the screen.

How do I to make braille.inc work.
I run the command loadkeys braille.inc then it says:

syntax error in map file

Ah, yes, you need a patched version of loadkeys (like Debian has).
That's another reason for just usingo my setbrlkeys program.

But the main problem is still to have the braille font properly loaded.
Did you try to restart brltty after doing this?

You need to have your LANG environment variable changed. But for this
your distribution needs to have proper utf-8 tools & such.

I don't know whether slackware 11.0 properly supports UTF-8, you'd
better look in its documentation or forums.

Ok. So there's progress: you now have an utf-8 environment. Even if
you get only "???" on your braille display, could you try loading the
font, run setbrlkeys, press pause, use asdfjkl; for entering braille
patterns, and ask a sighted user to check that they properly appear.

That said, I can't reproduce your "all ???" bug. Could you add

-X debugacm=yes,debugsfm=yes,debugctt=yes

to the brltty command line and send us the log output? (with the font
loaded of course)

1. Change to UTF-8: OK
2. load brl font: get all ???
3. Restart brltty with -X debugacm=yes,debugsfm=yes,debugctt=yes: still
get all ???
Where to check the log?
4. Run setbrlkeys,
5. press pause,
6. entering braille paterns: no response

In /var/log/debug, as usual. Dave, isn't this documented somewhere?

Ugh :( Could you try mere single dot patterns? (as I explained in
README, some keyboards are really not designed for key patterns).

There're not new messages about brltty in my /var/log/debug.
I'm sure that my keyboard supports multiple keys pressed.

Oh, maybe you need to add -l 7 too.

If you really don't manage to find it in your syslog, use -e for getting
message on the stderr output, which you can redirect by using
2>&1 | tee ~/log:

brltty -X debugacm=yes,debugsfm=yes,debugctt=yes -l 7 -e 2>&1 | tee ~/log

Mmm, strange: it looks just sane.

By any chance, do you use any special color / bold characters, or
something like this? After loading the font, you may need to call the
"reset" command to make sure the terminal is properly reset. Just
to make sure, could you send us a copy of /dev/vcsa when the font is
loaded?

i'm not sure that's a standard across all distributions. I usually recommend
that people use -e and redirect standard error to a known file.

Mmm, was the font really loaded? But anyway, it let me discover that
your screen is big (128x48), hence probably a frame buffer, so I tried
with a frame buffer, and could then reproduce the bug, so we will
hopefully be able to fix it.

There is a fix in the subversion repository, which you might want to try
(See "The Development Repository" subsection of "Download" section of

Appreciate! The braille display problem was solved.
But after running setbrlkeys and pressing pause, while press any braille
key, there's still nothing to happen.

Mmm, strange. I guess setbrlkeys didn't complain? Once pause pressed
and released, the 'f' key, for instance, doesn't produce an f, but
doesn't produce any character either? And if you press pause again,
does 'f' get back to producing f?

That means that your distribution failed to really correctly set an
utf-8 environment: it has to notify the kernel too. For this, you can
use

unicode_start lat9wbrl-16.psf lat9wbrl.uni
