those wascally wabbits.
When you go to a dircet url at live365, you are redirected,
but the url to which you are redirected changes at least daily.

so

Is there any way to make mplayer or mpg123 follow redirection?

Hi,

My suggestion is to do:

curl -I <address>

and cut'n'paste the address that's returned as part of the HTTP header.

Geoff.

Many, many thanks. I did not know about curl. It looks
like that could be the beginning of a cron job to retrieve
podcasts. I have just installed it and have got the "Science Show"
from Radio Australia playing nicely as I sit here.

Yes, mplayer can't follow the redirects and trplayer can.
Live365.com modifies the url depending on if you are registered and/or a v i p member.

The curl command can find the url that mplayer needs.
I made a little one-line command that works for me in bash.
Put it in /usr/local/bin and it seems to work ok.
You have to find the proper name of the stream you want to hear.
You can find that by searching their site and reading the url for a station.
So, for example,  I can type;

live iwebradio

and i am hearing the iwebradio stream using mplayer.

Here is the command that works for me:

mplayer -quiet `curl -I "http://www.live365.com/play/$1/" |sed -e '/ocation/!d; s/.* \(.*\).$/\1/' `

What precisely does that do? That is a new one for me.

As for listening to the stream, it looks like you need to
give them some sort of authentication before you hear what you
were hoping to hear. I tried mplayer on both the actual url and
the redirected url and it's redirected url and got a continuous
audio loop stating that I needed to register and try again.

You definitely get at least 3 redirects after visiting
the initial url.

I'm guessing the reason why this fails is because that URL does a redirect
which those other players don't like.
The redirect URL is
http://216.235.91.32:21700/play?membername=&session=iwebradio:0

Remember to put that URL in quotes if you want to put it on the command
line.

Geoff.

here is a stream i listen to often:

http://www.live365.com/play/iwebradio/

trplayer plays that stream just fine, but mplayer and mpg123
always give me a recording.
How Come trplayer can find the stream but the others cannot?

If you can make mplayer work at live365 from the command line,
I would appreciate your contacting me off list with details.

Thanks.
