Hello!
I need to change from a p4 to an amd athlon processor.
Is this possible with linux?
Do I need to download another version of fedora core?
I've got the i386 version.
Also, how do I compile my programs?
as host I have written I386, but what shall I have instead?
thanks
/kristoffer

It will work without modification.
If it is the 64 bit athlon, you might want to install the kernel for the
64 bit.

Yes, changing the kernel should work.
But if you really have a 64 Bit CPU you could use a 64 bit distro too.
E.g. Debian offers such a distro. But that means, that you have to setup
a new system.

the short answer is: yes.
the long answer: only minor modifications to 2 key configuration files would
be needed (if at all).
the system should detect any hardware changes you've made and ask you
appropriate questions regarding those changes (usually, when migrating cpu's,
you also migrate a motherboard in the process).
as for the version of the linux kernel: I386 will function just fine and
compiling will not be a problem either (unless you wish to use some cpu
specific enhancements).

You'll find Athlon kernel rpms in the standard RPMS directory. Of
course, you should use x86_64 if you're using one of the 64-bit AMD
chips like the Opteron.

Ok, will Fedora detect that processor under installation?
I hav only seen i386 installation images.
Also, What processor is really the bst? p4 or athlon 64?
Can you explain the differences betwen these two for me?
Also, is a 3.0 ghz athlon the sam as 3.0 ghz p4?
I've heard somwhere that the athlon is faster, but I don't rally know
how it is?
Can you tell me?
