Hi!
I have questions about Yars.
What distributions of Linux does it work with?
Also for those who don't have a hardware synthesiser or in my case, I can't
find the attachment for my Apolo 2 which fits in the Com2 port, would it be
an alternative to Speakup in the case of boot up to shut down once it is
installed with software speech?
Hope someone can answer my questions.

It's called yasr.

I know it is available as a binary for Debian, and likely Redhat as
well.

It won't quite work all the way from boot up to shutdown, but I think
you could have it started automatically when you log in. It might be
possible to have yasr read you the login: prompt, but from what I have
seen of the documentation it looks like it runs as a sub shell. To get
software speech in yasr you will have to have the flite and eflite
packages installed as well.

I had yasr working on slackware 8.1 but it won't work on slackware 9_0
since it's impossible to build either flite or eflite on slackware 9_0
because of gcc 3.22. I suspect I'll be able to build flite and eflite if
I remove the development package from slackware 9_0 and temporarily
reinstall the development package from slackware 8.1. I'm glad I don't
throw out useful CD's.

This is really interesting, as I couldn't compile flite or eflite on
slackware 8.1, but it compiled with no trouble on 3 systems that I
installed with slackware 9_0.

What were you using for ./configure line options on slackware 9_0 on both
of those packages, and were you using gcc 3.22? The last slackware I had
this running with had gcc 2.95.3 on it as default install.

I highly doubt that gcc 3.2 is the problem. I built flite, eflite and yasr on
Debian with a 3.2 gcc, and had no particular gcc related problems. This must
be related to something else.
