Editing Control Characters, Linefeeds, Etc.

Hello,

This also pertains tho the websirte I am maintaining, which is for 
Wisconsin Braille, Inc. The original website was created using Frontpage. 
I've been trying out Tidy on it and may use Edbrowse also. Some of the 
material that goes on it is originally from Word files. This material has 
a lot of extra linefeeds and a lot of tabs when it is converted to text. 
Is there an editor which can do a find and replace on these characters?

Emacs can do this, though it's taken me six months to find out how and I
may not be doing it the best way (part of the reason I'm responding).

To enter a control character, precede it with a C-Q. To replace all
occurrences of a string after Point, use the replace-string function.

For example: Recently I had to repair a Web Braille file (Captains 
Courageous) with faulty end-of-page sequences that my bb.sh script 
couldn't handle. The key sequence was as follows:

C-M-< (top-of-file)
M-xreplace-s<tab> (resulted in replace-string)
<Enter>
^q^m^q^l
<enter>
^q^m^q^j^q^l
<enter>

All done.

I've been using emacs for the past 6 months solid and am still by no 
means fond of its interface, but it seems to be able to do lots of 
stuff if you have a few lifetimes to find out how.

On a very distantly-related note, how can people not on Debian handle 
Debian packages? I tried once getting edbrowse but got depressed 
before figuring out how to deal with .deb files. No fair cheating by 
telling me I don't need the Debian distribution; I want to know about 
.deb files whether or not it's necessary in this case. <Grin>

I realized as I got up this morning that top-of-file is M-<, not C-M-<.

Bookshelf http://safari.oreilly.com provide either free subscriptions  or 
reduced cost access to blind and/or low vision users?

Unfortunately, there's simply no free lunch here.  :-)  Safari starts out at
$9.95 for five books; I don't see how that can get any less expensive.  Some
public libraries subscribe to Books24X7, and you may be able to get free or
lower-cost access to that resource.  Bookshare already has most of
O'Reilly's Safari titles online, resulting from the partnership between
Benetech and O'Reilly and Associates.  If you're not already a Bookshare
subscriber, join immediately!

I had checked out Bookshare a while back - and based on this I looked at 
their web site again.  Unfortunately, they do not have a way to search by 
publisher.   I chose to do a title search for words, such as

DNS

Sendmail

Linux

Nothing for the first 2 - and the third only had 2 or 3, and I don't 
believe any of them were O'Reilly's.    If they have a lot of O'Reilly 
books they seem to be doing a good job of hiding them from me?

Any suggestions on a better way to find their books?

Does Bookshare have any other technical computer publisher on board?

Hi Debbie,

Yeah, I ran into the same deal with Books24X7.  I subscribed before learning
that one of my local libraries might be able to get it for me.  I still need
to check into that possibility.

As far as Bookshare is concerned, perform a browse by category.  Select the
"computers and Internet" category.  There you will find the currently
available O'Reilly books, and a few others contributed by volunteers.  I
consider Bookshare membership to be almost a requirement for any blind
person who has a computer, an Internet connection and is serious about being
able to read anything!  :-)

I'll do this - but it is a very cumbersome and time consuming way to search 
for a title.    In addition - upper case for emphasis - they do not list 
publisher on the browse page - you have to click on each book you are 
interested in to find out the publisher... on well..

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at the situation,
that category is not heavily populated at the moment, so browsing should not
be a significant problem.  :-)

I'm not sure. I had the same experience, which is why I suggested their
O'Reily titles may not yet be in the catalog.

I do know that they have access to all the O'Reily Safari titles. And,
they have them in pristine XML, so they'll be very high quality copies
at BookShare.

I would suggest writing them to find out how to get at them. If you do,

Hello Debbie and Janina,

Bookshare is gradually moving the titles from O'reilly to its collection.
Several weeks ago, they added approximately 20 titles.  At this time, they
are a bit short-staffed and are unable to process O'reilly titles as much as
they would like.  However, if as a user, you are interested in obtaining a
particular title, please write to oreilly@bookshare.org and the staff will
obtain a title for you.

I hope this information helps.

P.S  The books that currently exist, are in an excellent quality.  They are
not yet converted in the BRF format, considering the challenge to convert
technical material into braille.  However they are available in Daisy,
which, in turn, can be converted to html which are nicely linked and
excellent heading navigation is provided.

Hi,

I think it is also worth mentioning the O'Reilly CD bookshelves. They are
of course not free but very accessible. It is sheaper to buy a CD
bookshelf than to buy the same books in printed form so it is quite ok I
think.

Hi,

You can buy the bookshelf CDs directly from O'Reilly. They are also
possible to buy from Amazon. I use to pick up used ones from EBay since it
is not possible to buy used ones from Amazon if you live outside US, since
one can only enter zip code, not country.

immediate download by current Bookshare.org subscribers can be found by 
visiting this link: http://www.bookshare.org/web/BooksOreilly.html.
All the books listed on this page of O'Reilly's website can be requested
through Bookshare.org (and will be available through it as well, but that's
an effort still underway). The link is http://www.oreilly.com/catalog

We are talking to some other publishers
about technical titles, but for now, you will do best to search generally
under the Computers category on the site.

sed can handle control characters if you have a version that's fancy
enough.  I'm pretty certain doing these kinds of conversions is listed in
the sed.faq file.  There's tr that can be used too.  You can join
sed-users and that's a yahoogroups.com mailing list if you run into any
problems.
