msn registration

Since centericq doesn't support registration, I went to www.msn.com. Is the
passport there what I want to register for? At any rate, they had a picture
where you type in the characters, and they had a link to use if you can't see
the picture. Only, in lynx, it's (you guessed it) "unsupported url scheme!"
Haven't tried it in link the chain yet. I'd like to know if there's an easier
way to do this if anybody has accomplished it.

However, I wouldn't recommend Hotmail to my worst enemy.  Hotmail is
probably about the most spam-ridden and insecure email box in the history
of the internet.  And I wouldn't trust Microsoft with all the personal
info they want about me in Hotmail registration if my life depended on it.

with debugging hooks that I made ("dd" is your friend: binary editors
are for wimps).

True enough, but I believe in the terms of service, it says something to
the effect that you have to give accurate information about yourseld, and
if they feel like you didn't give accurate information thay exercise their
absolute power over you and take away your hotmail account and hence your
passport, which also takes away your ability to use the messenger.

extract the text from the image?

Oops!!  That was from my signature.  Sorry for the confusion.  I have Pine
set up to generate a random signature from the fortune file every time I
send a message.  The line you read about the sbin loader happened to be
from the sinature that was generated for that message.  I wish it would
have generated the signature that it generated on the next message.  It
said "avoid the gates of hell: ust Lunux."  I think that would have fit
quite well into the spirit of the message. LOL.

Well, the other problem with Hotmail accounts is that people can easily
hack into them and use them for spam.  Then if someone complains, the
problem is automatically blamed on you, as it was your account that sent
the spam email, even if you didn't know it was being done.

I think about the only thing to do is to sue Microsoft.  Sounds crazy, but
unfortunately it's true.  Even if you could get to the link, the audio
file that is provided is "intentionally garbled" according to the page
where I found it.  And if you try to listen to it, it will take you many
many tries before you gan get one you can halfway understand.  My wife
still uses windows and I was trying to set her up with a passport so she
could use the messenger, and so that's how I found out just how hard they
intentionally make it for blind or visually impaired people to actually
get a passport account.  It took me about an hour and a half just to get
her signed up, and the majority of the time was spent going to the exact
link to which you are referring over and over because their audio file was
too garbled to understand.  Then when I called Microsoft in an attempt to
resolve the problem, I got nothing but the royal run-around.  No one
wanted to even take the time to listen.  One person told me she would let
me talk to her supervisor to try to work out the problem and promptly put
me on hold for 15 minutes only to hang up on me.  And then somebody
finally gave me the number to their legal department, which turned out to
be nothing more than a bunch of voice mail and prerecorded messages.
So to briefly sum things up, I don't think we will get any cooperation
from Microsoft and we will have to resort to legal remedies just like so
many other people including the government have had to do in the past.
Although this time, I hope the results are a little more favorable for us,
as so far, Microsoft seems to still be able to continue doing everything
the courts told them they can't do anymore, and seem to be able to get
away with all of it somehow.
I didn't mean to take up so much time and disk space ranting, but I felt
this was probably the best place to let people know what Microsoft is
doing now and what needs to be done to remedy the situation, since we were
on the topic of setting up a passport account.

Well, Lorenzo, you did better than I. I can't listen to the file on either links
or lynx; links will let me save it but it's a .srf file, whatever that is, and
nothing I have seems to play it.

Well, I had to setup my wife's account using Windows unfortunately.  That
is how I was able to get it to play at all.  An SWF file is a Macromedia
Flash file.  Those files require a Flash player.  Unfortunately, Flash
players are plugins to graphical browsers, and won't work on text-based
browsers at all.  Once Gnopernicus becomes a little more stable, I think
we will be able to open these files through Mozilla using the Linux Flash
player.

Thank you very much, Tom.  I knew that if I told enough people, somebody
would not only simply understand my problem, but might actually be able to
attempt to help me solve it.  I didn't know where I could go or who I
could turn to.  Thanks for going to bat for me.  I could use all the help

frustration thus far.

Yep. LOL.   Looks to me like the same result I got.  Just another stall
tactic by Microsoft.  I can assure you that the message has been deleted
and that no further action has been taken.  The response was intended to
get us off their back by making us think that they might actually be
forwarding the information to the product group.  I am about 99.9% sure
that the product group, whoever they are, will never even hear of this or
see the message.  Or if they do, they won't act on it, and they will try
to justify their actions with a bunch of doubletalk and other bs that
means nothing except "we don't care and won't do anything to fix the
problem."
