I ended up throwing in the towel on this one. I had speakup turned off
and had done chmod 666 /dev/ttyS0 as root so the tts device would be
accessible, then ran yasr and got complete silence. Strangely enough with
the DTK_PROGRAM=doubletalk and DTK_PORT=/dev/ttyS0 set I can't even run
emacspeak without getting process speaker not running error. This is on
slackware 9_0 with gcc 3.22 too.
