First do a locate mysql.server. If it's not found but other things are found like mysqladmin; you have a broken package. If mysql.server is found, try putting the full path to mysql.server and mysql.server start into one of the system's start up files like rc.local. Then reboot the system and check by doing dmesg >dmesg.log and read the last lines. If you find a successful start up of mysql mentioned in there you don't have a broken package; but if you get all kinds of errors, don't waste anymore time on that package.
