Hello,
I just downloaded vim-6.1.tar.bz2 . When I run
tar xfz vim-6.1.tar.bz2
I get an error message saying it is not in gzip format. When I run
tar xf vim-6.1.tar.bz2
I get a message saying that it does not look like a tar file. What gives?
Thanks.
John

Your options are out of order.
tar xzf filename.bz2
though should work a bit better.

This file is in the new bzip compression format. You will need to use the bunzip2 utility to decompress it before you untar it.

Hi John.
that's not a gzip file; it's a bzip2 file.
You need to run
bunzip2 and the filename.
this should leave you with the tar file and you can do
tar xf
to that tar file. Notice you don't need the z option as you've already done
bunzip2 to unzip it.

Cheryl

The order doesn't matter. The z modifier only supports gzipped files. .bz2
means that it's a bzip2ed file (use bunzip2 to uncompress), and not a gzipped
file.

That depends which distribution and version of tar you are using.
Originally the option was -y, then it was changed to -I, then to -j. The
latest "stable" version of tar (v1.13) is more than three years old and
has no bzip2 option, but most distributions are either using newer beta
versions or applying ad-hoc patches to add in bzip2 support with differing
letters for the option. It is a mess for the time being.
