Hi listers.
I downloaded and trying to install the linux speakup distribution.
I successfuly boott with my speech synthesizer, select English as language
and speakup as keyboard. That's when the problem ocures. I get a message
that an unhandled exception from anaconda happened, and my system shuts
down, the cd is ejected and the only option is to reboot. It also says
something like a bug report that I can save to a floppy and send it to
anaconda's development team.
Can someone help? Should I choose another keyboard layout?
Thanks alot.
Nektarios.

Hi, Nektarios:
You've stumbled across a known bug in the current release of the
Speakup Modified Red Hat Distribution. There is a workaround and
we're working on a solution. The workaround is also documented in
the latest draft version of our installation HOWTO available at:
http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/disks/redhat/HOWTO_INSTALL.html
Here's what you should do:
1.) Create a bootable floppy or a bootable cdrom using only
the boot floppy image.
2.) Boot from this floppy (or cdrom) without the
installation cd rom available to the system. In other words, keep
the drive bay open, or don't insert the installation CD ROM yet.
3.) This will give you an additional screen that asks you to
specify where the installation images can be found. At this point
you can insert the CD ROM and continue.
PS: There is also a second bug where the speech appears to be one
line below where your selection actually is. In other words, your
installation language selection appears to default to French,
though it is actually on English. Be careful. This behavior
continues on many screens. The problem has been narrowed the the
new release of ncurses and the newt library in particular. We are
also working toward a fix with this problem.

Ok thanks alot for the response.
I created a boot floppy and I am about to start again.
About the other bug with the newt library and the cursor. Is there any way
to tell when the problem actually occurs? In other words, is there any
speakup function with the navigation keys to tell you which selection is
actually active?
Regards.
Nektarios.

I think the best way to know for sure is to check the char
attributes with Insert+dot. The highlighted item will be
different from the rest and should be directly above.

Ok, after much effort and moving around I finally installed the distribution
on my system.
However I made 2 mistakes. Can you help me to correct them?
1. At the very last screen I accidentaly selected the graphical interface as
the default. So the system starts with x and much is loaded without actually
needing it. Can I go back to a text login prompt and not having to go to a
console with ctrl+alt+f1 to do it?
2. Lilo is booting to linux as the first choice. I still depend on windows
for some tasks and I want windows as the first choice. Can I do that?
Thanks again.
Ps. I know I have alot of reading to do but I am greatful that there are
many helpful people on the list.
I hope I will be able to help myself at some point.
Regards.
Nektarios.

Hi, Nektarios:
No problem. The two changes you want to make are easily made.
The issue of defaulting to the graphical mode is also addressed
in our installation HOWTO, because it is a common mistake. Here's
what you need to do.
Become root and edit the file /etc/inittab.
You will find a line that says something like:
id:5:initdefault:
The "5" sets the gui default. Change it to a "3" for the text
console default, so that it appears like this:
id:3:initdefault:
Next, edit your /etc/lilo.conf. First, make certain that you have
an entry such as:
other=/dev/hda3
optional
label=dos
Then, near the top, find a line that says something like:
default = linux
and change it to say:
default = dos
Save and exit, then type:
lilo
If lilo recompiles without errors, your default will be Windows.
Of course, your particulars may not be the same as mine. You may
have called your Microsoft partition "win," or "windows," where
I've called mine "dos." And, yours may not be located at
/dev/hda3, as mine is.
Congradulations on achieving a successful installation.
