I am on a network in the dorms at college here. Windows works fine online,
(however, barely much faster than a modem when my friend's system downloads
about 10 times my transfer rate). I try to boot linux up, and get dhcpcd
timed out in loopspk, and redhat just hangs at bringing up eth0, probably
unable to get the dhcp connection. I once could use linux on the network
awhile ago, but I goofed up the upgrade from 7.1 to 7.2 and had to
recompile my kernel. How do I get linux on the net so I can go online with
it? I wanted to see if I might be able to pull an iso image down before the
end of school at which time I got to go back to the dreaded dialup.

Start by doing an lsmod. Is the driver for your ethernet card
loaded?
If not, you'll need to add it to /etc/modules.conf.

If you have to add it, don't forget to do:

depmod -a

Then, load your card with modprobe.

Next, are the settings for eth0 correct? Look at
/etc/sysconfig/network and
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.

If you make changes in these files, do:

service network restart

Wow, don't I need to specify a host or dhcp server or something to get it
to work? The network card does work, and it loads up, as I set things up on
install, as I upgraded over the net and used it before, but it's been
awhile since I've played around with it, since my kernel had to be
recompiled with speakup because I used to get a ton of modprobe errors, but
those have since gone. I heard some servers need a host specified, but
windows never did require special set up, just set to obtain an IP
automatically and I was online.

dhcp will discover your gateway.

You'll need dns in /etc/resolv.conf.

That could be my problem, maybe. I'm sure it's dynamic too, not sure. I
know that for my IP address, I end up getting 192.168.1.x, can change when
I restart. For some reason, every protocol seems to function properly in
windows though, nothing seems to be blocked, probably done this way to
conserve ip's.

If you are using dhcpcd to acquire
dns addresses, they will be placed into /etc/resolv.conf.dhcp

You'll need to copy this to /etc/resolv.conf to pick up
the new addresses. It may also be sufficient to make
/etc/resolv.conf a symbolic link to /etc/resolv.conf.dhcp
