Hi!
I was thinking of obtaining the Redhat distribution of Linux with Speakup
which had been designed for Blind people. Unfortunately the file is
extremely large, I was quoted about 15 hours for a download and the other
problem is, I don't have a CDROM drive which could burn CDs.
Could anyone possibly give me some advice?

Michael:
The other option is to get a boxed set of official Red Hat discs.
Then you need only download the appropriate boot floppies and the
appropriate kernel from the Speakup Modified Red Hat Distribution
site. I will be publishing a step by step on this process soon.
Meanwhile, you might want to familiarize yourself with the
HOWTO_INSTALL file on our web site.
Once again, the Speakup MOdified Red Hat Distribution is at:
http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/disks/redhat/
If you choose to go this route you might want to sign up for the
Speakup list at the above url.

I notice from your email address that you probably live in the UK. If
you're near London, Manchester, Edinburg, or Glasgow the EasyEverything
chain of CyberCafe's have CDROM burning capability. I suspect that they
might have a bit of difficulty burning BOOTABLE cdroms, however...
Good luck.

Hmmm, I like Alan's advice. I would recommend checking this out.
You don't need to get a bootable CD ROM out of the process,
because you can create a bootable floppy from the image files,
and DOS & Windows imaging tools, provided on the first
installation CD ROM.
If you go this route, Michael, get the three installation CD ROM
images and the documentation disk. You can get by without the
source for now, and possibly forever.

The "bootability" of a cdrom is already included in the .iso images Red Hat
is providing.

Hi. I've checked on the speakup ftp sight and can't find boot floppies.
The link on the web sight returns a 404 error. Also, I've looked
in the directories under /pub/speakup/disks/redhat and couldn't
find anything.
I would like to try Redhat, but I can't create CDs
Thanks for your help.

True, but it breaks in the Speakup Modified Red Hat Distribution.
Therefore the hack, while we figure out the true fix.
So, if you want to install Red Hat without speech, or using some
other access technology, then use Red Hat.
If you mean to use Speakup and the Speakup Modified Red Hat
distribution, pay attention. Red Hat broke access as respects
text menus in version 7.3. This is true not only in the
installation, but also in various installed tools like the setup
command. The issue seems to be newt, and Bill is looking at
downgrading newt in order to fix this problem for our
community--while we work on a more permanent fix with newt and
the Red Hat decision makers.

Try again. Many of the broken links are now fixed.
While the floppy links are fixed, a new problem has cropped up
regarding the floppy images themselves. So, wait a bit on those.
They will get fixed.
I guess I want you to consider that Red Hat don't ask us if
everything is OK before we release the Speakup Modified Red Hat
Distribution. We do our best, but it's a process of discovery and
remedy. A number of changes in Red Hat 7.3 have challeneged
prevailing wisdom. This means rewrites to the HOWTO documents, as
well as new links and directories. It will all get fixed--but
we're still in the first week of the new Red Hat release, so
please recognize that there are issues that require resolution.

Let me try to make this clear:
1.) The 3 iso images available on the Speakup web site for
the Speakup Modified Red Hat Distribution do indeed contain
Speakup already compiled into the kernel. Also, the bootable
floppy disk images contained in the /images directory on the
first ISO image have Speakup compiled in so that you can install
using Speakup screen review. If you install from these iso images
you will get a Linux installation with Speakup already compiled
into the kernel;
2.) There are problems with the installer right now that can
cause the installation to abort with an error. Until these are
resolved, there seem to be some work arounds for getting a
successful installation, such as creating a bootable CDR using
the floppy disk image, or booting a floppy without a disk in your
CDR drive.

What do you mean, "nothing?"
If ftp explorer, or whatever it is, can't read thedirectory, I
don't know what to tell you. It's there, and it's full of files
and directories.
Why not try the ftp.exe that used to come in c:\windows (if
there's still such a thing).
Or get a cool ftp client like ncpftp

What do you mean, "nothing?"
If ftp explorer, or whatever it is, can't read thedirectory, I
don't know what to tell you. It's there, and it's full of files
and directories.
Why not try the ftp.exe that used to come in c:\windows (if
there's still such a thing).
Or get a cool ftp client like ncpftp

Hi
I believe that there a set of floppies that you can download to start
your installation. You can mount an iso image if you put it on a
separate partition.
If you contact your local LUG Linux User Group and you asked them,
