Hi,
Bookshare is, in fact, accessible by Linux users. You must
either be using the SSL version of Lynx or have Http-Refer enabled
in your Lynx configuration. These security measures are
requirements of our copyright agreement with the publishers so
that plain text browsers that do not have security enabled cannot
gain access to the download authorizations. Bookshare.org does,
in fact, have a clearly stated 45 day money back gurantee, so if
you should decide to join, your money can be refunded in full
during that period. In the meantime, I suggest you try to use
your security enabled browser on the public domain content which
does not require a membership. Thank you.

so how then is it accessible to linux users and not you? I would be
interested in this.

Peter:

I don't understand your response. Certainly, it can't be only an issue of SSL support, because that's (generally
speaking) more up to date on linux than on Windows. Besides, my conversations with Allyson have been clear that
additional software work is required. If, on the other hand, you're correct and the only security Book Share is looking
for is SSL support, then some kind of proprietary tagging on the server side has somehow excluded linux users--and the
web site doesn't comply with W3C WAI guidelines in that instance, imho.

So, which is it?

You may have over-looked part of his answer. I just tried BookShare's demo page
with lynx and was able to download, by pressing "d", a text file with no
problem at all. He also said:

>or have Http-Refer enabled
>in your Lynx configuration.

This is a setting which many may not be familiar with. When enabled, this
feature tells the web server the site the original link came from. BookShare
undoubtedly uses this feature to ensure that you download the book using their
own link. Check your "/etc/lynx.cfg" file to make sure that both of the
following are true:

    NO_REFERER_HEADER:FALSE
    NO_FILE_REFERER:FALSE

Hi Dave and all.
I can't find that anywhere in my lynx.cfg; tell me what i'm overlooking.
I was able to download from the demo page also, as I mentioned in an early post.
Did you go in and download another public domain book; try "the story of my
life' by Helen Keller or "american Notes" by Charles dickens.
I am puzzled as to why i can't find this seting anywhere in my lynx.cfg.
Besides, peter's first note said that I had to have either ssl or this setting;
now he says you have to have this seting. I hadn't overlooked it, but thanks for
asking.

point taken but please do take on board what people say and try and do at
the very least your level best to get things to a point wherebye people
can access bookshare without too much fuss..
as an australian citizen I can't take advantage of bookshare but I just
want to see everyone happy. even the developers/maintainers. <big grin.>
