I now have both a cdrom and a cdrw on my machine. They are both ide/atapi but i
am using scsi emulation; the cdrw is scd0 and the cdrom is scd1. I have no
problem accessing the cdrom or the cdrw as far as mounting or listening to audio
cds. However, when I try to run abcde and/or cdparanoia I get errors about
"unable to open cdrom". when I run cdparanoia with the -v option, the indication
is
Checking /dev/cdrom for cdrom...
Testing /dev/cdrom for cooked ioctl() interface
/dev/scd1 is not a cooked ioctl CDROM.
Testing /dev/cdrom for SCSI interface
No generic SCSI device found to match CDROM device /dev/scd1
Yet when I run abcde and/or cdparanoia as root, there is no problem. I assume
this is some kind of permissions problem, but I can't seem to find the source of
it.
/dev/cdrom is the symlink to /dev/scd1 and /dev/cdrecord is the symlink to
/dev/scd0. I am also a member of the cdrom group. I didn't have any trouble with
these programs before converting to scsi.
Can anybody see what I need to change here?
I have put this on other lists, but all i've gotten so far is other people with
the same problem and no solutions.
TIA.

Yes. You screwed it up! DON'T have your regular CDROM using scsi emulation
and don't load the stuff as a module. Compile ide-scsi into your kernel and
put in scsi generic support. Then pass the ide-scsic parameter to the
kernel. Look at the CD-Writing HOWTO for how to set this up right.

Hey, I don't know where you are getting your assumptions, David.
I edidn't do this as a module; it is in the kernel, including generic scsi
support.
And several people on several lists have told me it is better to put both the
cdrw and cdrom as ide-scsi rather than trying to keep one itapi.
And I read the cdrw-howto quite thoroughly.

Well ok all I know is that I had similar problems when putting both cdroms
on scsi emulation. I would check the that ide-cd module is not grabbing any
of your cdroms and that you pass the kernel the parameters to load your
cdroms.

Hi all!
I did just burn a cd and it turned out quite nicely.
I did the following:
used cdda2wav to make individual files of the tracks, but with the -O cdr option
so they made .cdr files.
2. Typed cdrecord dev=0,0,0 audio_01.cdr -audio audio_02.cdr (etc) to track 10
Originally, I tried dev+/dev/cdrecord:0,0,0 but got errors about read-only file
system; not sure why as it isn't read-only but the other worked so ok.
I don't have any nasty clicks between gaps or anything; it sounds really nice.
However, abcde in general and cdparanoia in particular still don't like my setup
unless I am root. Of course, I did the burn as root, but abcde has allways
worked for me as user and as it goes out to cddb and grabs track information I
would prefer to not be doing abcde as root. It is possible to do this and then
turn ownership of the artist directory over to the user in whose home directory
it is, but I'd prefer to be able to do it as user.
Well, at least I found something that works.

I solved the problem!
The permissions in sg0 sg1 or whatever sg is relevant to you have to be changed
to at least 666. Since root owns these and cdrom group isn't involved with them,
the permissions are too low for you the user to access them.
Abcde/cdparanoia now working for me!
