Financial Program for Linux

Hello Listers,
A while ago there was a discussion of financial programs, e.g. for
balancing a checkbook, which could be used by blind Linux users. The
upshot of the discussion was that nothing was available. I have now
finished writing the Grade 2 routines for BRLTTY and the translation table
for U.S. English. Of course debugging still remains, and that could take a
while. However, I am ready for another programming project. If you would
like to have a financial program that you could use under Linux, please
let me know what features you want. If such a program has come into
existence, I'll just look for another project.

You might want to consider creating some kind of character-based front-end 
for GNU Cash. This might be an efficient approach.

Hi John and list!
I would love to have such a program; I don't keep my dOS one up like I
should, but might do better if I had a linux one (well, one can dream!)
I would want it to be able to take in all my transactions (deposits,
checks, atm's, finance charges, tetc.), calculate my balances as I enter
new data, allow me to have various expenditures in categories and
calculate (for instance, how much I spent on medical or groceries during a
given time period). I have several accounts, so if possible, I would like
to be able to use the program to track all of my accounts without having
to set up another copy of the program in another home directory or
something. This is on the fly, so I may be leaving things out that I would
like, but it should give you some idea.

Thanks, Cheryl, Janina and Karl (Who sent me a message offlist). I'll keep
your suggestions and preferences in mind. At this point, writing a
text-based front end for Gnucash seems to be the best approach.
I've been trying to get involved with the Gnome access project (Can't
quite remember what it is called). However, I'm not getting much response.
Does anyone know the status of this project and who really takes offers of
help  seriously?

FYI:	This project is a kind of middleware layer to support 
accessibility in user level applications, so it's quite different from the 
financial app you were asking about yesterday.

Okayl, that's a budget calculator not a financial calculator.  Those have
specific categories for accounts.

When I want to balance a checkbook I use a spreadsheet program.  supercalc
7 works well enough for that purpose and I can do additional kinds of
calculations like figure out each time my pay rate changes at the
beginning of the year how much house I could afford on that pay.  Also
what the effective tax rate turns out to be is easily enough done.  Other
accessible spreadsheet programs exist like oleo that are also under the
copyleft license too.  If I don't want to use a spreadsheet even with all
of its advantages, I can easily enough fire up dc and use that.  I think
there's a way to make dc calculate like a regular calculator too.  At
least I got that working once.
