Hi:
Do you have a second computer with speech which you can use as a terminal
to install Linux and next install and get ready brltty to work with your
BL40 on the main system? It can be a way to go.
Or you can use BL40 as the speakup synth for your Linux os installation,
get everything ready with brltty, make speakup silent and activate brltty.
I'm not sure why you got so much trouble with Windows, I'm not a fun of MS
but can make their products to work for my needs and win98 SE and win2k
pro work-station versions seems in my case relatively stable.

You can get a terminal program for Braille lite,and use that to get Linux up

If your BrailleLite is also serving as your speech synthesizer, then it's not
too bad since it needs to be in Speech Box mode anyway. You'll just have a
short "momemnt of silence" between telling SpeakUp to "shut up" (it has a key
sequence for this), and telling BRLTTY to "get going".

Yes that would work I suppose although I don't plan to use the braille lite
as a speech device regularly given that the quality of the speech is less
than desirable so I would prefer not to have to rebuild a kernel but that is
a valid option for sure.

Depending on what you want, once you have BRLTTY working, you can start it very
early in the boot sequence and no longer rely on speech.

This is very true; I used to use speech solely, as what I had was a
doubletalk-lt. When I started using brltty and subsequently got
cable-modem access to the Internet, I put the doubletalk on ttyS0
and the braillelite on ttyS1. I still have the capability of using speakup
or emacspeak when I want to do so, and I tend to use speech when I have a
longer text file to read. For the most part, though, I use brltty by
itself. I love the way I can move around in an editor or among web links
with brltty and know exactly what I'm doing and where I am. I also very
much enjoy being able to listen to audio with my sound card and not
having to listen to my speech synthesizer at the same time, if I am doing
several things at once (which I usually am). I also was a
bit surprised to discover (though logically I should have realized it) how
much using the speech was sometimes slowing me down; the line I wanted
would be right there on the braillelite when the speech synthesizer was
still blabbing away.
This isn't meant to start a speech vs. braille war. For one thing, braille
displays are expensive and I wouldn't be using one if I didn't have the
equipment due to my job. For another thing, speech and braille both have
their advantages and disadvantages and, there are skills and tricks and
shortcuts one learns in order to make excellent use of either or both. I'm
only
saying that, after having used speech extensively, it was delightful to
discover some of the advantages of using braille. Since i've allways been
an avid braille reader anyway, and will in most cases choose braille if it
is available, my delight in using braille with my computer would come as
no surprise!

Well, it happens that brltty has some speech support on its own.
But, regardless. You decide. Other than ViaVoice with emacspeak, there is
no software speech in linux access. So forget that. Get a hardware synth,
or make do.

BRLTTY now has support for ViaVoice, and I'm very interested in how to improve
BRLTTY's speech support. I'm not a speech user myself, so, even though I'm

Hmmm, guess I hadn't realized that you were using ViaVoice. Please pardon
my error. I will definitely try this out. I often use my portable in
circumstances where it's cumbersome or impossible to also use an external
hardware synth. I'm quite happy with emacspeak, now that I've learned a
bit of emacs, but I'd like options for shell access.

Me either I am not much of a speech fan myself either I like to use a
braille display whenever possible as it tends to be more productive I find
which would be why I can't justify getting a hardware synth.

Got one small problem...no way of booting linto ilnux with brltty. Debian's
boot disks appear to be relatively simple to hack and since the whole thing
can be ftp'd I shouldn't need to make another coaster (gotta love easy cd
creator.). So I just need to figure out how on earth I'm going to get the
disks hacked. It also doesn't help that my floppy drive will do a quck
format but not a full format. So that isn't too good either as i don't know
if it'll properly write the images. Ack this is messy.... It's worth all the
trouble I think though. I didn't mean to cause any trouble but dang it I
just can't stand the "This program has generated errors. You will need to
restart the program. Blah blah blah.) IE is particularly bad for that. Just
tryin to get some work done here and I need another OS so if somebody wants
to tell me how I can manage to hack a boot disk so I can boot up then I'm
good. The trouble is that I don't have another box to use as a terminal or i
coudl have rigged something already. I feel kind of helpless here because I
can't even compile brltty without a running system. If I could figure out
why my floppy drive was messed up that would help too. Thansk to all of you
for offering advice and suggestions and things. You can learn a lot from a
list like this. I at least now know what the heck I have to do but I just
have to figure out how to get it done...Thanks a lot though....I will see
what I can figure out here.

I am in the process right now of trying to figure out how to add brltty to
root.bin. It does involve recompiling brltty, however, and then modifying
root.bin, so I think you'd have to be working on a linux system to do it.
If I get this figured out before you or somebody else does, I'll be glad
to share my modified root.bin with you, as I also am using the
braillelite, but as I'm trying to do it in between a job and other things,
better not to wait for me. I'm saving your address, though, and will let
you know if I get this done before you post that you've installed
successfully.

Look at the README file within the bootdisks subdirectory inside the BRLTTY
archive for hints.

Yes, and actually it's possibly a bit easier with debian because debian's
root.bin is already on a separate floppy. Just where the README file says
mv initrid.img initrd.gz
gunzip initrd.gz
mount initrd /mnt -o loop
substitute "root.bin" "root.gz" and "root" and it mounts fine.
The two things I'm stuck on are:
1. I get errors when I try to do "make" instead of "make install"
and
2. it remains to be seen whether this will all then fit on one floppy or
whether something might then have to be removed from root.bin to make
room.
Also,
3. I am hoping that the replacement /sbin/init will work for debian; it
seems that it should.
