Terminal Program Using Ymodem

Terminal Program Using Ymodem

Hello,
There must be a program for communicating between a Linux system and a
terminal that uses the ymodem protocol. I would like to use such a program
to transfer files between my Linux box and my Braille Lite. Is there one
already in the Redhat distribution?

The terminal in this arrangement, is on the braille light side.  Linux, if
you have the rzsz programs available, your terminal on the BL will have no
problems.

Hi John and other listers:
Of course I don't know about redhat, but in debian there is minicom, but I
don't think it uses ymodem.
I found and have been trying to use a package called lrzsz. It installed
fine and tries to work, but I don't have it working with my braillelite
yet; I'm sure there's something obvious I'm just not realizing. I'm
wondering if there's a problem having brltty running and trying to
transfer with the package at the same time or something. Anyway, I'm
continuing to try to work on it, so will keep you posted, and any input
from people who have done this would be appreciated.

I don't have a man entry for rzsz, so I guess it isn't here. Can it be
downloaded somewhere?

Cheryl,
Yes. There is a problem with running brltty and a terminal program for
file transfer at the same time. You must stop brltty, then get out of
speech box mode on the Braille Lite. You can then press chord-s and y.
Apparently, I don't have lrzsz, so I haven't been able to try this, but my
experience with the Braille Lite indicates that this is what you would
have to do.
Let me know what you come up with. The keystroke sequence after you get
out of speech box mode may be different from what I would try first.
And let me know where to download the lrzsz program.

Ok, John, I'll try this when I can; I can allways use a speech program
without brltty since my speech synthesizer is on another com port.
I had been going out of speech box mode, but I hadn't been stopping
brltty.

It is actually lrzsz; man lrz.

It can be downloaded at the normal places.

Try typing sz -b

and see what happens.

Wouldn't sz be for zmodem? The braillelite doesn't support zmodem. And
what does the -b stand for? I am sure I will find it going through the man
page, but if you are going to give directions, it's a good idea to tell
what they mean.
Also, not at all meaning to be crabby, but for me with debian, I don't
have a problem knowing where packages are, but redhat's setup is different
from debian. John is a newbie, and it isn't helpful to tell him that a
package can be downloaded "at the normal places".
If he knew what "the normal places" were, he wouldn't have to ask on
this list. Thanks for the info, though.

Sz is the name of the package (lrzsz), which contains all of the
down/upload protocols--z, y, x, b, etc..

Binary.  For sending binary (non-text) files, or for sending files that
you do not want translated to the local new line convension.

Um, with all due respect to you and John: I have enough faith in John's
intelligence, to believe that he will ask questions about those points
which he does not understand.  If he didn't know what sz was, what -b
ment, or where "the normal places" were, I have to assume that he will
ask.  Otherwise a short answer to a question, will turn into a novel, as
each little aspect is explained, muchof which would be unnecessary, as I
am certain he already knows some things.  That would certainly preclude
me, and probably others, from answering at all.  If on the other hand, one
can answer a brief question with a brief answer, and then elaborate on
spesific points that the questioner does not understand, the questioner is
much more likely to receive answers.

Since John has apparently communicated to you that he does not know where
"the normal places" are, I will tell him to start with:
