Hello All

I need a command line way of converting MP3 files to wav files, under
Linux.

Is there such a tool? No sound support on the machine itself; I need a
full software conversion.

Thanks

Luke

Hello. I think something like this would work without sound:

mpg123 file.mp3 >file.wav

You need mpg123 of course. I am not sure of the home site but Slackware
and I am sure Debian include it as packages.

Mpg123 has its own option to write to a wave file and needs no soundcard,
it's the "-w" switch; so you can do something like:
$ mpg123 -w file.wav file.mp3
Mpg123 isn't the only mp3 decoder able to do that, many others can...

You can also write to a raw file if the decoder supports outputting to stdout,
with mpg123 you can do:
$ mpg123 -s file.mp3 >file.raw

And of course, if you need to convert the data, sox is your friend and you
can even use it in a pipe, all this without any need of a sound card.

Hope this helps...

Hi Luke.

mpg123 will convert .mp3 files to .wav files. I'm not sure if it
requires sound support to do it or not.

amp as well as mpg123 can do that.
The latter is better (hehe) cause you can evne specify a section of the
file to convert.

Luke,

the program mpg123 which comes with linux will convert .mp3 to .wav do
"mpg123 --help" to get the command-line options., but, I think it is the
-w switch followed by a file name which writes a .wav file instead of
playing it through the sound card. and let's get some sound on that
machine, there!

My redhat system already has it, didn't add it. Is there an rpm of freeamp
the command line based version?

The Redhat version of FreeAMP "Free Audio Music Player" is at url:

http://www.freeamp.org/download/rh6x/freeamp-2.1.0-1.i386.rpm

I don't know if there is a command-line version in the RedHat package.
but, there is the .rpm file for you. Have fun. I use slackware kernol 7.1
myself. Slackware 8.0 comes with the Speak-up kernol for most external
synths.

Wow, one problem, I'm using redhat 7.1, don't know if 6.2's rpm's will
install, tried even vlock, and it said it couldn't be installed.
