No, I don't have sendmail on my system, but it definitely is trying to
connect locally. But I don't know why or I could fix it.

Localhost is already listed, but I tried putting it in anyway and it
didn't help. I think either fetchmail or exim are treating my smtp like a
localhost instead of remote. I really think this file looks different from
the one I was using before I re-installed; of course I downgraded from
"testing" or that is I haven't upgraded back to it yet. I've tried using
my machine name as the visible one; I've tried using chartermi.net as the
visible one; it makes absolutely no difference.
Other than making a f.fetchmailrc, which I haven't done yet because I'm
trying to test with each change I make, I'm not sure what I can do to
fetchmail. If one of these two programs is throwing a fit, I'd say it's
exim. Also, exim as a somewhat less complicated example file, but if you
use eximconfig with that file in place, of course it regenerates a new
file of the kind with the package; if you want to use the sample file
instead of the package one, you have to do it by hand each time. I
wouldn't mind that except that my changes don't seem to be changing the
outcome. What I'm actually getting at the bottom line is "query status 10
(smtp). What is really perplexing is that i had no trouble with either
exim in the past, except for the initial learning phase.

Fetchmail is trying to connect to exim re-sending to user@localhost,
either you configure fetchmail so that it sends to what exim knows as its
FQDN or you add localhost in exim's local_domains list.

It sounds as though fetchmail is trying to connect to sendmail on your
local machine, but you don't have sendmail running.

Ok, I had to taotally re-install this weekend. I was trying to build a
rootdisk and I accidentally deleted an important directory off of my
system instead of the rootdisk in progress. The good thing about it is
that i now know that I am able to reinstall by myself.
I of course installed exim and fetchmail. I can send mail but I can't
fetch it. I can fetch at shellworld
so I know it isn't a problem with any of my email accounts. I can send,
though I did have to put an entry in "/etc/email-addresses to accomplish
that. I can use fetchmail to check how many messages there are, and if
there is no message fetchmail terminates normally. If there are messages,
however, I get no messages fetched because ai get '"smtp connection to
localhost failed". I went back to my ppp account briefly without my dsl up
to see if that was the source of the problem, but it wasn't. I obviously
have something configured incorrectly on my machine, and any suggestions
would be appreciated because I have been working and working at trying to
solve this. I will still be able to read replies by going to shellworld
and fetching for all of my accounts there. Thanks.
