Braille Lite Settings for brltty

Hello,
Any Braille Lite 40 and brltty user, please tell me if it is necessary to do
anything except set the Braille Lite 40 to speech box mode with dots
345-chord and p-chord. That is all that is necessary for Jaws, but maybe
brltty is more sensitive.

You shouldn't need anything else.  However, it might be a possibility that 
your serial cable is flaky and picking up interferences.  You could try 
lowering the baudrate in BrailleLite/brlconf.h to something like B4800 and 
match that setting on your device, even if the default 9600 bauds should be 
quite safely low already.

chkconfig gpm off

Users of the latest BRLTTY (2.99y), which is now downloadable, the BrailleLite
baudrate can now be specified on the command line. Do it lke this:

    -Bbaudrate=4800
or
    --braille-parameters=baudrate=4800

Oh, and in addition to kudzu you might try turning off gpm as well, just in
case it was configured to expect a mouse on your BrailleLite serial port.

Yes.

You can see which device it's attempting to use by doing "ls -l /dev/mouse".
It'll likely be either a symbolic link to a serial port (ttySn) or a symbolic
link to "psaux". The former, especially if the device name matches, is an
indication of a conflict, whereas the latter should be okay.

Speech box mode isn't what you use I don't think. That's for a braille lite
to be used as a synthesizer to the computer. You'd use a dropped J cord,
3-5-6 and S to get braille display going on the serial port.

Well I tried turning gpm off and rebooting. No effect. When I did
ls -l /dev/mouse
before turning gpm off I got a message saying that the file could not be
found.
Thanks to everyone for their help. We'll get this thing licked eventually.

Just catching up on email so don't know if anyone's told you yet, but ...

You don't need to reboot to have a change take effect in linux--usually. 
In fact, you rarely need to reboot at all.

In this particular case (with Redhat), you can stop the running mouse 
service by doing:

service gpm stop

Of course, you can also start it with:

service gpm start

And, if you make new settings and just want them to take effect, you do:

service gpm restart

Works well for all kinds of services. See /etc/services.
