does someone know about a characterbased icq client that is  usable for us
in linux?

The program is known as "micq".

I do not know off-hand where it may be obtained, but the name should be
enough to allow you to do a google or other search for it (Linux ICQ
micq).

just had a look around my debian-package listings.
Foudn two other icq-clients
zicq is an micq-hack wiht an ncurses interface
licq is a modular thingy wiht a lot of interfaces including a
console-plugin.

Well you could try gnomeicu which is easier to install then Licq. GnomeICU looks more plain but Licq looks more like icq2000b for windows. Only that before you install Licq, make you sure you have qt2.2 installed because the qt plugins in Licq needs the qt libraries.
