I get an error
can't open file /root/.emacs
I don't get this when I type "emacs" just when I type "emacspeak"
There weren't any errors during compilation or installation so I had no
Idea. In factg, I was just about to ask the list that question.

The emacspeak shell script specifies the Emacspeak startup file
(emacspeak-setup.el) and the .emacs file in your home directory on the
command line that it uses to start emacs. If there is no .emacs file in
your home directory, an error message will result. You should create a
.emacs file to customise Emacs according to your preferences, and to load
optional Emacs packages of your choice.
Please also subscribe to the Emacspeak mailing list by sending a
subscription request to emacspeak-request@cs.vassar.edu (just send an
empty message with "subscribe" in the subject line and/or the message
body, to the request address specified above). You will then be able to
ask Emacspeak-related questions in the context of an intelligent community
of Emacspeak users.

What Linux distribution did you install on and what version.
I.e. This was one of the errors I got when I loaded emacspeak
on RedHat 5.1
Upgrading to Emacs 20.3 solved it.

Before you go through the process of upgrading emacs, try the
following.
prompt> touch /root/.emacs
Installing emacs will not place a '.emacs' in your home directory.
Since the emacspeak startup script references this file directly,
you'll get an error if it's not there.

I'm running on slackware version 3.6, linux kernel 2.0.36, gnu emacs 20.3
and emacspeak 9.0 (or at least trying to run emacspeak)
I've got the latest versions of all thingexcept the kernel. The reason for
this is that the dtpc module is not quite ready for the 2.2 series of
kernels.

Hi everyone,
I have a few questions concerning the use of Linux.
1. How many screen readers are currently working under linux?
2. Would any screen reader work with linux for the Mac? Also would it be
able to utilize the Mac plaintalk software speech synthe?
3. Does Emacspeak work with X Windows? Will there be any attempt to make
any screen reader work with X?
Thank you very much in advance for any kind help for all or any of these
questions.
Regards,
Thian.

I know of two for the tty level, one for emacs. Screader and svlpro work
at the tty level (command prompt). Emacspeak works as a subsystem of
emacs, which I can't seem to get working at the moment. I personally use
svlpro at the tty level.

I don't know how well it works, but they'res one called ultrasonix which I
thinkis in either alpha or beta test quality. I don't have X installed
here and I cannot comment on its use.
Emacs runs in a terminal X window if you run it from X, so I'm not sure if
emacspeak would work. As for X applications outside of emacs, I don't
think it would work.
