OK I'm somewhat late with a recommendation. So here is a short resume.

T.V. Raman had managed to organized a sponsored booth in a
last minute maneuver (custos go to ADOBE SYSTEMS and IBM).
The heading of the booth said

"ADOBE SYSTEMS - IBM
EMACSpeak"

It was probably the smallest booth IBM ever had so far, but it was
a booth. ADOBE and IBM presented bleeding edge XML stuff (XML means
eXtensible Mark-up Language. It is a text based language and will be the
successor of HTML)

Originally it was arranged that we (better T.V. Raman :) would
demo Emacspeak at the Redhat booth. So sorry if you came to their booth
and didn't find us there (but the RH people should have known our
location because their booth managerin knew that we had our own booth
even before I knew it... )

There were no directly blind related events besides Emacspeak.
The other important thing which was impressive was the broad support for
Linux which is coming up now:

IBM presented a super fast 48 node Linux cluster and is officially
delivering Linux on their servers now. Big signs on their booth said
something like "IBM embraces the Linux community" (3 year ago people
nearly would have died with laughter if someone would have predicted
this). PS: IBM has a nice voice recognition in their shelves which
is said to run on their AIX Unix variant.

COMPAQ presented a high performance dual CPU Alpha server which ran pretty
smoothly under Redhat 5.2. The hottest things the ITSY which was
"non" demoed by some of its developers walking around. The ITSY is
a hand held computer, even smaller in size as the Palm Pilot. Powered by
a Strong-arm CPU it runs Linux and even can run Emacspeak.
Current models had about 16 mb RAM and 8 mb ROM if I recall.

ThinkPad.

The combination of a fully supported Linux Laptop and EmacSpeak
is a complete turnkey solution. What more would you want ?

Best of all if you switch the screen off you can get some serious
battery life.

Other than Raman's emacs speek demo, which is of course excellent, what do you
informed listers recommend at the linux conference this week in San Josey?

Thanks.
