I'm trying to find a command line midi player for linux. I tried to use
mp from the adagio05 package; the binary plays total silence and when I
tried to compile the thing I got link time errors. So that package is
proving useless right now. Every other player I tried to find for midi
files was some kind of cute X windows thing. Any ideas out there?

BTW, is there any way yet to run Realaudio without having to install X
windows?

<Steve>

Look on sunsite.unc.edu for playmidi.
I use playmidi to play midi-files on my Roland jv30.

If you use dosemu, you might get plany.exe to work for you.
If you haven't got it, I could send it.
mp.com is truly a piece of trash. Not only did we have identical results
but mine happened on
opendos 7.02, but mp.com locked up my system and I had to power down to
regain control.

Yes. It has been tackled already on this list.
I think you'll find it in the archive.

Brian.

I looked there and saw a little guy called rap.??? I think that requires
the realaudio player from Progressive, doesn't it? If it does, then you
have to have X installed on your machine. Perhaps I'm missing a point
here. Sory for repeating a gon-over subject, but I'm way behind on the
lists lately so could have missed the important news on this subject.

Whenever I try to run playmidi I get the error message "unable to open
/dev/sequencer"
I haven't tried any other midi players yet, but I need to find out how to
configure /dev/sequencer.

Not necessarily. There is a program called xvfb
(x virtual frame buffer). If they are using it, you don't need
a real X-server running. If they're not using it, then you
can run it yourself. There is an rpm package for it.

Regards,

Brian.

Hello K.C. Habib,

It seems that you have no device /dev/sequencer on your system.
Semply run /dev/MAKEDEV and you'll have it.

    Regards,

        Jos.
