Linux Documentation accessability

I've picked some of the linux documentation and finding that much of
it is in latex, I thought I'd try some of these filters to get it into
something more readable than those God-awful latex commands.  I like
both the emacs info mormat and html will certainly do.  Well,
latexinfo for emacs gives me errors when I try running (version 1.70),
latex2html looks promising, but it requires latex and some other
utilities.  At this point, I don't see an easy way to install latex
without taking up over 30 megs of precious diskspace on my little
linux system.  So that leves me to ask on the list to see what others
might have done to make these documents more readable.  I suppose
ascii will do, but I rather like the hyper text format due to the
reference nature of these manuals.

Any ideas?

probably detex (delatex) does what you want. You can find it under

ftp.gwdg.de:/pub/linux/suse/4.3/suse/tex1/detex.tgz

There is a good collection of Linux documentation in SGML format; the
Linux Documentation Project developed a DTD and put it out in that form.
>From SGML format, it can be filtered into HTML, I believe, which should
be the simplest way for you to build hypertext. I haven't checked on this
work in some time, but I'll be glad to track down the internet location
for the files.

I saw some sgml stuff in the LDP directory, but in particular, I did
not see things like the system administrators guide nor the users
guide; they were in their own directories and in latex format.  But
yes, that would be a good approach.  I will have to visit that area
again and see what the sgml tool kit has to offer now.

The linuxdoc-sgml tools converts to roff among other formats. Then it's
easy to produce ascii documents. I think that some of the books are
available in plain text as well. For example the nag (network
administrators guide) is available in that format.

Yes, the latex version is.  This other version (html) is apparently at
this mdw thing.  I don't recoginze that directory off my head so I
will have to go out there and take a look for myself.

I haven't had time to research the current state of SGML documents
for online access, but for some reason I blanked out when I probably
should have been more directly responsive...  If you need a good Linux
guide and you can't use our printed book (Running Linux) then O'Reilly
has always been very cooperative in making it and other books available
in electronic form on a case-by-case basis.  Send me personal mail if
you need more details.
