look in your /etc/fstab
if there is a line mounting the /dev/hdc9 partition in it without the
keyword nonauto on it, it is automagically mounted during bootup.
May I advice you not to remove ide-devices from your system wehn it's
running unless you have a speical harddisk-reck for it which support
hot-swapping of IDE-disks.
