However GNU (the license Linux is distributed under) stands for GNU is not unix. THe term unix is the term for a big family of operating system where under OS's as HP-ux, SonOS, Irix, Digital Unix, BSDI and all other BSD fomrs (openBSD, netBSD, freeBSD). You will notice that a lot of software is written for linux as well as unix. Te only big differents (however excluding the BSD's) is that linux runs on x86 platforms mainly (it was written for it and needed to be ported to the other platforms like Sparc, Alpha e.d.). The term unix is therefor not a single thing but mroe a overall-term for a lot of different system e.d. If you need more explenation/info please ask.
