I didn't reply then but will do now.
linux is a unix.
However GNU (the license Linux is distributed under) stands for GNU is not
unix.
THe term unix is the term for a big family of operating system where under
OS's as HP-ux, SonOS, Irix, Digital Unix, BSDI and all other BSD fomrs
(openBSD, netBSD, freeBSD).
You will notice that a lot of software is written for linux as well as
unix.
Te only big differents (however excluding the BSD's) is that linux runs on
x86 platforms mainly (it was written for it and needed to be ported to the
other platforms like Sparc, Alpha e.d.).
The term unix is therefor not a single thing but mroe a overall-term for a
lot of different system e.d.
