If you want to keep your DOS/Windows intact, you'll absolutely have to learn what that is and how to deal with it. Partitions are not specific to Linux. They're just a reality for any operating system. You're planning to have two operating systems on your hard drive. To do that, you'll need a minimum of two partitions.
