I want to install linux, and who can tell me where I can get the software.
How big it is? maybe for me it is too expensive to download it.

I installed Debian Linux, which I downloaded from ftp.debian.com. I think
the base was a little over 8mb, although you probably wouldn't consider it
complete (doesn't include emacs, gcc, or a lot of other things that you'd
probably want.) I can't really say how much you'll need to download; it
depends how much you want to install. Maybe 25-30 mb, or more; hard to
say. You might want to consider getting linux on cd-rom, though,
especially if downloading costs you money (I believe they range in price
from about $20-$50 in the US, or something like that). There are also
several distributions of Linux (Debian, Redhat, Slackware, ...) Redhat or
Debian will require more sighted assistance for a blind person to install
then Slackware (you can immediately use a terminal through the serial port
with Slackware, but you can't with Debian, at least. I had a sighted
friend help me install Debian, although I have no idea how much work it
was because he knew what he was doing and just installed it for me, so I
really didn't learn anything about installing it.) Ftp.cdrom.com is home
of Slackware (which you can also get on cd--might be cheaper/easier) but I
believe they mirror other distributions.

You can get all linux distributions on CD for under five dollars (US
funds), at:
http://www.cheapbytes.com
I use them, as do others, and they are quite good.
Note: you will get no paper documentation with it; you'll have to deal
with text docs on CD/FTP sites (but since most of us have no use for paper
docs anyway . . .).

What does it mean when it asks you whether to allow a cookie? i.e.
cart.cheapbytes.com cookie: MV_SESSION=F2KrgEjp:ou. Allow?

there's a blinux CD--look through the archives to find it--but hanz is
away for a couple weeks. some of it is on redhat/contrib--old stuff
though. emacspeak is small and manageable--so you might get that if
you have the requisite hardware
also there is a server for emacspeak+mbrola at
ftp://ftp.progsoc.uts.edu.au/users/bart/mbrola_server/
see the emacspeak archives for the whole message

Hi,
Which, if any, CD distributions of GNU/Linux contain emacs-speak and the other
programs from the blinux web site?
cdh

At the risk of taking the list off topic, I think I'd like to mention that 99% of
cookie use is benign. Cookies allow the web developer to do rather interesting
things.
1. Create state aware applications. HTML is stateless. If you want to know what
the user's last page was, so you can carry him through an application, such as a
shopping cart, you need some way to carry information from hit to hit. I note
that the original poster was using a shopping cart (cart.cheapbytes.com) to shop
online. The cookie enables this technology.
2. Cookies allow the log analyzer to track the clickstream, but unlike most
people's expectations, this is not used to look at individual sessions. Rather,
it allows the developer to find out what percentage of his traffic arrived on a
page from each of his links, and what percentage of traffic left his page via
each of his links. This allows navigation to be tuned.
3. Cookies allow the site operator to store your identity and priveleges from
session to session, so that you need not authenticate each time to receive
personalized contents.
The key to understand is that cookies by definition only go back to the domain
that set them. Thus, if you get a cookie from microsoft.com, only microsoft.com
can read it. They are not sent the cookies from your other sites.
You can always turn off or reject cookies, but you may find that your web
experience suffers. Your choice.

that is the case now and I expect the percentage to

Once someone has information nothing stops them,
especially in this age and media, from sharing it
with whomever they wish especially given that it can
be worth money.
