Linux Screen Reader
A scriptable screen reader for the Linux GNOME desktop environment.
The Linux Screen Reader (LSR) is an application that transforms the
contents of the computer screen to other media, enabling non-visual
access to the graphical Gnome desktop environment. The basic function of
the screen reader is to report changes in the state of an application as
a user interacts with it using the keyboard or other system input
device. What is reported to the user and what commands are available for
controlling the screen reader are determined by cascading scripts that
completely define the user experience. The scripts can be loaded and
unloaded by the user at run time, and custom scripts can be written to
improve the usability of certain applications and interactions.

I wonder if this is better than gnopernicus? I also wonder if I can use any
better sounding speech besides Festival which I don't particularly care for?
I have CD's around here somewhere of speakup Fedora core 3 or 4, forget
which now as I almost must use software speech some how unless I can buy an
ISA to PCI adapter card somewhere.

- From reading the information at the links in the email, it seems that
this screen reader is free for non-commercial use, and seems to use IBM
ViaVoice, which suggests to me that they are not using gnome-speech for
the output. I haven't looked any further at the moment however.
I didn't know you could get ISA to PCI adapters.

I am sure a lot of people would like that, but I don't think that is
possible. Have you looked into using a DoubleTalk LT instead?

No, I might download it later and have a play and report back.

I wonder if you could. I would need it if I wanted my double talk in here.
USB to serial exists, but I am not sure what you would use on the
commandline to make speakup invoke with such a thing if Linux even could use
one. I don't know how my USB ports are numbered, thought they weren't.

wonderful,
will the shell also be accessible with this screan reader?
and I suppose IBM ViaVoice is not open source, so makeing it work with
festival will be a much better option.

You can these days use any speech that you can get going through
speech-dispatcher as there is no a driver for speech-dispatcher in
gnome-speech.

I did and it works ok.
There are/were some problems with the rate and pitch settings, but with
extra configuration that can be fixed.
What i have tested was the use of the generic speech-dispatcher module
while running gnopernicus.

gnopernicus help can be read but you need to learn about carets. The
caret is f6 and it toggles on and off caret mode. The caret mode is off
the first time you run gnopernicus, so hit f6 then hit the help button and
see if things get a little more talkative.
