Has anyone managed to get tcp_wrappers_7.6 built and operating under any
version oor any brand of linux yet?  If you don't know what that i

should give you background info.

Tcp_wrappers is a standard binary part of Red Hat, and
any other decent distribution.  It is essential to
configure it after a new installation, for any decent
security, of course, along with the other security
configuration basics, such as installing all security
updates.  If one neglects those things, good security
tools in linux are worthless, and you WILL get hacked
(but maybe not quite so quickly as with a certain
dominant vendor's junk software).

That version is standard on Red Hat Linux 7.3. I'd expect all distros of about 
that age to have the same version.

hidden and protecting itself from update.

TCP Wrappers is in slackware by default.  It says so in the slack book and tells you how to configure it and stuff. So it is there.

Probably does. I couldn't find any mention of tcpwrappers in the package list 
for 8.1.

slackware 8.0.0 hasn't got it so far as I can tell nor does it have an
earlier version.

No I did not run to any keyboard.  Any such action where I live is likely
to end up with some broken bones and some time in hospital.  Thanks for
the pointer on slack book.  I found that on one of the cd's but I don't
think it installed with the other packages.

I've gotten email to the effect tcp_wrappers was supplied and info on
configuring it is in slack book.  I'll check that out and hopefully I'll
also find out how to update the software.

Well, knowing that xinetd had replaced most or all of
the functionality of tcp_wrappers in recent Red Hat
versions (but they still installed it by default, for
some reason), I ran:

rpm -q tcp_wrappers --whatrequires

to find out what still uses it, and came up with
nothing.  Probably some server I haven't installed
still needs it, or libwrap.a is needed to compile
something.

Anyway, as you have guessed by now, slackware probably
uses xinetd too, thereby obsoleting tcp_wrappers.
Alternatively, maybe slackware has a slightly different
naming scheme for that package?

Bottom line, look at the documentation for xinetd,
assuming that is what slackware now uses, and see if
you care any more about tcp_wrappers (probably not).
Sorry about my error; hopefully you now have the info
you need (look to xinetd for the replacement
functionality).

hmmm, found tcp_wrappers and it's scattered all over.  Managed to get some
of it configured too.  Though it's mentioned in slakbook I needed to check
out some manual references in section 5 and so far one in 8.  That's
version 1.30 I think and I have 7.6 but will have to do a little debugging
before a make.
