ppp-go doesn't go, here's some output for what does happen. I've copied
the lines from README.linux into /etc/modules.conf for 2.2 kernels and for
running ppp on a serial modem. I have gotten out using minicom on the
serial modem, so that's no problem and modprobe -v ppp returns no
complaints.
The date on this machine is at least a day behind time. Below you'll
find a script file containing commands and results from attempting to
run ppp-go. I had gotten my serial modem and serial card working and had
already set up the modem link but as of now, this isn't going anywhere.
Is this a kernel 2.2.19 bug or a slackware 8.0.0 bug or both, and what
can I get to fix it? ppp is version 2.4.1 if that's any help and this
is an intel-based pentium machine.

/usr/sbin/pppd: This system lacks kernel support for PPP. This could be because
the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or because PPP was not
included in the kernel configuration. If PPP was included as a
module, try `/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'. If that fails, check that
ppp.o exists in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/net.
See README.linux file in the ppp distribution for more details.
