Ok, I just went back and got the redhat 7.2 boot.img from the Redhat ftp,
followed the procedures in the boodisk README for brltty, and booted. Brltty
came up with a screen that welcomed me to redhat and told me to choose the
language.
I think it is therefore reasonable to conclude that there is some problem
between RH7.3 and one of the scripts in the brltty Bootdisks directory.
Btw, the 7.2 modified floppies work both on my desktop and my laptop.
So I suppose, if I still want to experiment with Redhat, I could fall back to
the 7.2 floppies.
But I would hope the problem(s) can be found and remedied instead.
Not that I'm unwilling to do it myself, but I really don't have a clue as to
what to do.
Thanks.
Cheryl

Please check the sizes of your two disk images. It may be that the one
containing the BRLTTY binary is too big for the floppy.

Hadn't thought of that because dos rawrite usually would complain about that but
dd doesn't.
Remember, though, that my problem is occurring on the myboot.img floppy, not the
ramdisk. Of course, part of this could be due to the need for dd as part of the
command line at boot, if indeed this is needed for the ramdisk, but it would
have to be the .img file that is too big, which I imagine would explain the
kernel image not being found.
Here are the sizes of the redhat 7.2 and 7.3 boot.img, myboot.img and initrd.gz
files.
Cheryl
all of the boot.img and myboot.img files purport to be 1474560 bytes.
The initrd.gz for 7.2 is 996136 bytes.
the initrd.gz for 7.3 is 780745 bytes.
So the initrd.gz is actually smaller for 7.3.
the initrd for 7.3 is 780745 bytes.

Given all of the problems I've read about with 7.3 off of this list, I
think 7.3 is an alpha for 8.1 and 8.0 is a beta for 8.1.

Yes, it may be that trying to do 7.3 isn't necessarily the best thing.
but I don't like problems for which I can't find solutions.
there has to be an explanation, and I intend to keep messing with it until I
find it.

Alot of the solutions are in redhat erata for 7.3 and patches many of them
security related. Only problem with all of that is that up2date in both
redhat 7.2 and redhat 7.3 has its own set of problems so you need to use
http://updates.redhat.com to bypass those problems.

Perhaps if a message is not on the original topic i.e.: not
talking about brltty specifically but
rather about redhat, you could change your subject line, please.
Then people don't miss messages they would have wanted to read and they don't
have to read messages not of interest to them.
Thanks.

Hello,
I'm in complete agreement with Cheryl. Even worse is sending messages
with no subject. Fortunately, that doesn't happen often on this list.
