Speakup is a patch to the Linux kernel. The tar file you downloaded won't 
do anything for you unless you patch it into the kernel, and successfully 
compile it on your system.

While many of us first got our Linux computers talking that way, it is 
generally not the easiest way for a new user to get Linux talking with 
Speakup. 

Remind us what Linux you installed and where you got it, please?

PS: Speakup and emacspeak will coexist nicely.

Speakup questions

Hello all,

First of all, thanks much to everyone who responded to my question about
problems with booting into Linux. I hope to sort out that problem in a day
or two.

Now to my questions:

1. I just downloaded the Speakup file Speakup-1.00.tar.gz. 
Does this zip file contain all the installation files, or do I need to
download any other file as well? I ask this because the readme file talks
about default key assignment, but the corresponding file appears to be
missing. Should I download this file separately?
2. I already have Emacspeak installed on my machine. Will Speakup recognize
and 
co-exist with Emacspeak? Also, should Speakup be unloaded prior to using
Emacspeak?

Hello,

I think the default key assignments file is in the "doc" subdirectory
of the "speakup"speakup" directory that results from unpacking the
archive.  It's also on the speakup web site.  


Speakup and emacspeak can coexist, unless you use the same external
synthesizer for both.  In general, when I wish to use emacspeak, I
boot a kernel image that does not start speakup.  I have, however, had
both running, where emacspeak uses Viavoice Outloud as its synth, and
speakup is using my doubletalk lt.

Redhat 7.1. I installed it from regular Redhat CD's.

A sighted friend has offered to help me with Speakup installation and the
kernel compilation. I should however have all the relevant files ready to
begin with. 
I will be using Speakup with DoubleTalk PC internal synthesizer. Apart from
the file speakup-1.00.tar.gz, Which other files would I require?

Hi, Geetha:

There's an easier way, provided you can download about 10.3 mB of data.

Use anonymous ftp and go to:

ftp.linux-speakup.org

Once logged in, cd to:

pub/speakup/disks/redhat/7.2/RPMS/

Please note the capital letters in the directory path above.

You need to download two files.

1.)	The kernel-2.4.9 ... appropriate to your cpu, i686, i586, i386, 
etc;

2.)	consoletools-19990829-36.i386.rpm

Be sure to download both of these two .rpm files in binary mode.

It happens that the kernel and the console tools from Red Hat 7.2 work 
just fine with Red Hat 7.1, and these are the latest available for 
you--unless you have a fast Internet connection, which I suspect you don't 
have.

Once you have these two files, you install them as follows:

rpm -iv [filename]

where [filename] is first the kernel file, and then the consoletools file.

HINT: You don't need to type the entire filename. Instead, begin to type 
it, and then press the TAB key. Your Linux shell will fill out the rest of 
the filename for you, which is certainly very helpful with these very long 
filenames. If it beeps, you haven't typed enough to make it unique, so 
just add some more chars and then do TAB again.

After you've successfully installed these files, you have one more step to 
a talking Linux:

Edit your /etc/lilo.conf with information about the new kernel and your 
speakup parameters. Here's an example--edit this example to match your 
situation ...

In the top section, make sure to have a line like the following:

default=litetalk

Then create an entry (set aside by blank lines at the beginning and end of 
the section) something like:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.9-31
	label=litetalk
alias = l
	initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.9-31.img
	read-only
	root=/dev/hda1
	append="speakup_synth=ltlk"

Make sure that your image= and initrd= actually point to the correct 
filename in /boot. Also, make sure that your label= and default= are the 
same, "litetalk" in my example above.

Save and exit.

Run lilo as root:

/sbin/lilo

When you reboot, you'll hear Speakup chattering away shortly after the OS 
begins booting.

Please excuse me. You did say what synthesizer you have in your message, 
the Doubletalk PC internal. This is excellent. It's the best card, imho, 
for Speakup. Simply change the lilo.conf to something like:

append "speakup_synth=dtlk"

And, of course, you might want to change the label= and default= as well.

One more suggestion, and I'm sorry if I overwhelm you with ideas!

If downloading 10 mB is unworkable from your side of the planet, here's 
yet another very good shortcut to a talking Linux.

Be sure you've installed the kernel source rpm. Look at 
/usr/src/linux-2.4. if you see files, you've got it. If not, it's on one 
of your CD ROMs in the RedHat/RPMS directory. Install with a similar rpm 
command:

rpm -iv kernel-source*

Next, cd to /usr/src and create one more symbolic link which the Speakup 
patch will look for:

ln -sf linux-2.4 linux

Now, you can cd to linux/configs. In there you'll find the Red Hat kernel 
configuration for each supported cpu. Find the one for your cpu and copy 
it to ../.config, so that it is in /usr/src/linux/.config.

Now, after patching the source files with Speakup, you can simply issue 
this command:

make oldconfig

And you'll only be prompted about Speakup specific things.

This should help insure you don't make a mistake in the dozens of 
configuration choices and end up with a kernel that won't boot. We know 
that your installation boots. It's highly advisable to add Speakup before 
trying out other configuration changes--if any. This way, Speakup is the 
only change you'll make.

The rest of the process remains the same:

make deps; clean; bzImage; modules; modules_install; install

And, you still need to edit /etc/lilo.conf and rerun lilo as before.

Hi Janina,

Thanks for all your suggestions and detailed instructions. I am constantly
amazed at the amount of assistance offered to new users here.

As you have rightly guessed, a 10MB download is not practical with my
Internet connection. The shortcut you suggest is however an excellent
alternative and should work out just fine for me. I will try it out today
and will inform you of the outcome.

And how does one reinvoke Speakup when one exits Emacspeak? 

Is it possible to configure things in such a way that Speakup is
automatically killed when one runs Emacspeak, and reinvoked when one exits
Emacspeak? Just curious.

Hmmm, don't know about an automated scripting, but would expect something 
is workable as Speakup's control parms are all in /proc/speakup.

The PrintScreen is used as an on/off toggle.

It doesn't matter anyway since i386 i486 i586 and i686 architectures are all
from the same family so kernels or packages for any of those architectures
should work on all of the modern amd or intel chips that you woudl usually
find in a PC's if I understand it correctly.

That is untrue. glibc for i686 will not run on Pentiums or less. Nor will i686 
kernels - it will not boot.

The compatibility is on only one direction.

Soon as someone writes a driver. ... I an' help--sorry--but if you
have specification for how to communicate with the thing and the
know-how, you might start by modifying one of the drivers (say, for
the Doubletalk LT or the Accent SA) and stick in the relevant codes to
communicate with the Infovox. Assuming external, of course. You might
could send docs to Kirk, but no guarantees when he might get round to
doing anything with them.

Someone might correct me, but you might try BRASS at

At least, that the lst place I knew of where it was. I haven't tried
it though, so can't speak to its usability.

i have some questions about speakup.
1. when will there be any suport for the infovox speech synthesizer?
i know that i have asked the question before but i ask it again because i
shall go a course next year wich contains for example installing linux.
2. is there a way to get an infovox speaking right now.
