Hello,
Thanks to everone who replied to my question about installing Samba last
week. I have now managed to install it from the Redhat 7.1 CD's, and will
install 7.2 or update from their Web site when this is working.
The rest of the machines in our office are running Windows 98 SE. No
password is requiredd for one machine to access another.
Smbclient works on one of them, called "beans." If I type
smbclient -L beans
There is a brief wait, then it asks for a passwork. I press enter as the
man page instructs, and get a list of things on beans, including the hard
drive and printer. The command then terminates.
I have tried a number of different ways to get the prompt that would allow
smbclient to operate like ftp, but it always gives either a list or an
error message and then terminates.
Another machine on our network is called "welcome." smbclient always says
that the connection failed.
Thanks for any suggestions.
John

Hi John.
I know nothing about this, but is there a switch that can be used that will
generate a log for debugging so you will know what happened to cause the
terminations?

I don't like the idea of any computer running without password protection
anywhere, even small offices. The main reason is that people get spoiled
and think it's always that way and make unresonable requests based on
that later on.

My suggestion is to setup a Linux box as a PDC server with users
authenticating to it. That way you can easily setup permissions for file
access, print services, make backups, etc. My suggestion is to either
check Samba website for documentation or buy a book from O'Reilly. It's
worth it.

I use smbtar on Linux to backup windows machine with password and PDC
(W2000 server). Also, all users print over Linux print server.

Check /var/log/samba/ for error and other logs.

You need to experiment with other parameters to smbclient command. -U for
user is an important one. I can't tell what will work for you without
knowing your setup in details. Also, W98 is a real pain. W2000 is a bit
better to integrate into network.

John:

You can do better than ftp type interfacing. You can mount the smb share in a directory. Here's my mount command:
I put mine in a bash script:

cd /home/janina
mount.smbfs //server/janina$ h -o username=janina,password="password",uid=500,gid=500,iocharset=iso8859-1
mount.smbfs //server/common g -o username=janina,password="password",uid=500,gid=500,iocharset=iso8859-1
cd -

Janina,
Thanks. You are always helpful. I'll keep your message for reference.
Meanwhile I got smbclient to access the other machines on the network
when run as root. The next step is to get Samba up and running as part
of the boot process.

ok I'll post my suggestions at the top of this mesasage.
ome of the things you need to do iw add the ip addresses for the win9x
machines to your /etc/hosts file.
the syntax is,
ip-address, machinename alias
and ensure that samba is using encrypted passwords even though you're not
supplying passwords.

Hi, John:

OK, to get samba starting in the boot process, do the following:

chkconfig --level 35 smb on

The chkconfig script will take care of setting up all the appropriate rc levels.

The above commands tells it to initiate samba in runlevels 3 and 5.

To check a setting, you would do:

chkconfig --list smb

Leave the "smb" off this last command for a report on everything.

Hi.
Has anyone noticed that pricewatch.com nolonger works with lynx?
or is it just my installation now?
When I go to the pricewatch.com site, lynx just shows
what looks like random junk on the screen,
not even an error message.

If someone could try it and let me know?

many thanks

Phil

I just tried pricewatch briefly and it appears to me to be working ok with lynx.
But I haven't really kept up on this thread so maybe I'm just not hitting your
problem.

no, I think Karl had the same problem, and now lynx
is back to normal. I sent them a message
this morning explaining the problem,
and apparently, they must have changed something.

Hi. It says it requires a browser which
uses frames. I get a screen telling to switch to a browser
that supports frames.

Kenny:

It lies. If it only wanted a screen reader that supported frames,
it would know that lynx supports frames. It wants you to use its
own idea of a browser that supports frames.

I, for one, find these "get a broser that supports frames"
offensive.

Yeah, Kenny, but sometimes you really do need to switch to a browser that
supports frames, and sometimes you can actually still navigate the site with a
bit of trial and error. I allways ignore those admonitions and try to see what I
can do with the site anyway.

Good point, Janina. Lynx does support frames, but not in the way most of these
sites mean. However, it still is possible to navigate some of the sites that
make this claim.

You can ignore that warning, and just access the frames, which should
appear above the warning.

Lynx _does_ support frames. It just doesn't render them in the way
Winblows browsers do.
