Jason, what comport does this disk work with? Does this disk only work on
the equivalent of the DOS com1 port or can it be configured for any
standard serial port? I would be interested in receiving this disk also.

Thanks in advance,
Doug

In order to use a rootdisk over a serial port, you have to modify it a
bit, wich means having access to an already working Linux system.

First, a getty must be started on the desired serial port in the
/etc/inittab file. There is also a file that contains a list of ttys for
wich logins are allowed in /etc... I don't remember the name. The serial
tty (ttyS0 for example) have to be in there.

But, I think that there is also an easier way. When bootdisk and rootdisk
are loaded, you may login as root and start a getty process by hand on the
serial port as follow:

	agetty 38400 ttyS0 vt100

You may be careful and type that without seeing wyat you type. After you
do so, a login prompt will appear on the terminal attached to the serial
port.

What exactly was the problem when trying to install slackware? I have a
rootdisk for slackware 3.0 which allows installation over a comm port. If
you want, I can e-mail it to you. This can be a bit of a pain to set up,
but its really nice when it works.

Hello out there, I have been trying to install the April 96 Redhat and
Slackwar linux on my pc but can not do it using my second dos computer as
a terminal. I finally managed to get Slackwar installed using my wife as
a speech synthesizer but would still like to accomplish the installation
on my own. I am new to linux if I am missing somthing obvious please
let me know. Thanks for now.
