Hello,
A couple of weeks I ask what are the differences between Unix and Linux.
could the people who replayed to my E-Mail resend their mail, as I have lost
those mails.
Thnks Petra

hey Petra,
I didn't reply then but will do now.
linux is a unix.
However GNU (the license Linux is distributed under) stands for GNU is not
unix.
THe term unix is the term for a big family of operating system where under
OS's as HP-ux, SonOS, Irix, Digital Unix, BSDI and all other BSD fomrs
(openBSD, netBSD, freeBSD).
You will notice that a lot of software is written for linux as well as
unix.
Te only big differents (however excluding the BSD's) is that linux runs on
x86 platforms mainly (it was written for it and needed to be ported to the
other platforms like Sparc, Alpha e.d.).
The term unix is therefor not a single thing but mroe a overall-term for a
lot of different system e.d.
If you need more explenation/info please ask.

Sorry for the nitpicking, but this is not entirely correct. Linux is "just"
the kernel. GNU tries to offer a complete unix-like environment (and more)
not based on one kernel. Hence, GNU programs are also found on BSD-like
systems and even windows. GNU/Linux would be the appropriate name. Also,
GNU is not the license nor copyright. More info on GNU can be found at
http://www.gnu.org.
IMHO GNU/Linux combines the best of the other unices; flexibility, hardware
support, POSIX-compliancy etc.
UNIX is too big a term to be compared to Linux as Linux is part of a
unix-like system.
Migrating to another type of unix should generally not be too difficult
though there are some minor differences. IMO it's useless to discuss these
here. Some people like these small differences, some don't. This is very
personal, so the best option is to try it yourself and determine what you
like best.
Regards,
xander

okay okay, but for most poeple linux is just the kernel including what
programs they can get for it.
btw, I did say that linxu was a kindof unix and what GNU stands for.
I only gave a general verview.

Hven't worked wiht BSD systems so I can't compare.

Said that.

Apart from that, for x86 boxes there's not much choice apart from linux and
bsd.
btw, other people would disagree wiht you that linxu is a unix. But please
don't start any OS-conflict here.
