Hello,
I'm trying to install samba on my Redhat 7.1 or maybe 7.1.5 system. I got
the latest Samba-client and samba-common packages from the Redhat site
with up2date. There were no error messages. However I can't find the
daemons that are mentioned in the samba Howto. When I went to the download
site recommended by the howto, the directory names were totally unhelpful.
"rpm -q samba" says that the package is not installed, but when I try to
install the packages from the 7.1 cd's it says that there are newer
versions of the packages already installed.
What's the next step?
Thanks.
John

I'm afraid you posted to the wrong mailing list...

Nicolas,
I posted to the blinux list because I anticipate an accessibility
problem. I am using BRLTTY. If I were sighted I could just run the 7.1
install cd's and add samba.

Are you installing SAMBA as a client or as a server? If you are going to
share files from your Linux system, then you may need a samba-server
package.

You may as well insert the CD, go to the RPMS directory, and install samba
by hand with a "rpm -iv samba*" as root.

Mike,
I need both to access files on the Windows machines in our office and to
give them access to files on my machine. I got the Samba-client package
from the Redhat site, but I can't figure out how to get the server. When
I try to install the RPM's from the cd's I eventually wind up with a
module dependency that can't be resolved with the cd I have in the
drive.
Since I am using BRLTTY and don't have reliable sighted helpers, this
message definitely belongs on this list.

John:

You need to launch the samba server, which is called smb.

service smb start

should do it.

The smbclient program doesn't need to be launched.

Do man smbclient to get a handle on it.
Once you are satisfied that you've got all the pieces in place, I can write more about actually using samba.

John:

Samba is very sensitive about modules. You cannot just use the latest rpm without updating its dependencies.

PS: Any reason you're not using 7.2? You should be able to upgrade with something like:

up2date -p

I think that's the correct flag, anyway.

PS: Red Hat is a good ways into its next beta cycle called Skipjack.

Nicolas,
The last time I tried to install from cd it said it needed libreadline
something. There is no file beginning with those letters on the cd.

OK, my memory won't be fully accurate on this, but there is a --what-provides switch to rpm.

I think it has to go with the -q switch, but I don't recall precisely.

Janina,
It seems I don't have the server, and I don't have any manual pages.
Parts of samba seem to be there, but not enough to do any good.
Thanks.

this is only tangentially related to the samba topic, but has anyone noticed
what a great product it has become in the past few years?

Samba has been here for something like 8 or 10 years, and it used to be a
network hog and slow, but now it's frankly, amazing!
It's a great example of free software at it's best. while I don't have an
array of machines using it now,
I recently saw how smoothly a bunch of windows and linux machines can
happily coexist.

not that it fixes your problems, but let's all lift our java-mugs in salute!
