I'd like to create voice messages by recording from a microphone plugged into my
sound card.

The simple approach described in the general sound how-to didn't work.
I tried plugging a microphone into one of the two jacks on the back of
my sound card, and following the steps described in the
sound how-to.
 Neither jack worked.

Can anyone reccommend a good step by step or tutorial on how to get this
working?

I've located my sound card by tracing back the speaker
cable to where it plugs into one of three
miniature stereo jacks on the sound card.

There are two other jacks and a DB type connector on this card. There is
no documentation or markings. Internally the software thinks it is a
soundblaster.

Am I correct in assuming that one of the other stereo jacks is
the microphone input?

Does anyone know what that 9 pin DB connector is for?

Thanks mightily for any help.

Rudy

Hello
Tyr the other two jacks on your card.
THe 9 pin db connector is a joystick or midi connector.
/Anders.

On my version of the genuine soundblaster, the center one is the
microphone jack. Make sure you have the right type of mic. It
must be one of the powered electret ones made for computers --
very inexpensive. Dynamic ones don't work. These take a plug
that is just like a stereo plug, but one of the leads is used for
power, I believe, not stereo. Then use a utility like aumix
(which can be used from the command line) to set the microphone
input to a reasonable level, and to record:

aumix -m Record -m 80 -m query

for recording at 80 percent input volume or, more tersely:

aumix -mR -m80 -mq

Aha! I was using a standard dynamic microphone. This was probably my problem.

Thanks. I'll look into getting a new mic and give it another shot.

If you want to use a dynamic, such as an SM57, or the like: you need to
run it into a preamp, and then into the card's line-ing jack.

Hi,
Double check that the microphone setting in aumix is set to r for record
and the recording volume is eg. 70 on both channals.

this is the method I recommend for quality audio recording.

condensor mics have an annoying habit of turning up the gain when there's
relative silence, so jans or computer hum or traffic are particularly loud.
having a preamp with manual gain and a high-quality yet inexpensive dyn mic
like the sm57/8 will yield a pretty good setup.

enjoy,
J

Actually, if you can beg, borrow, or lift, one, you'd do even better with
an EV RE 20. That's the type that NLS and others use, and is the mic of
choice for a lot of high end vocal work (the people who use two hundred
thousand dollar Neev mixing consoles, recommend those for recording
non-singing vocals, so you can't go wrong if you can find one in your
area).
