Hi!
I am thinking of having a Linux distribution on my PC. I live in the UK and
I am totally Blind.
One distribution I was thinking of purchasing is Redhat.
However, The nearest distribution for redhat seems to be somewhere in Leeds
but for some reason there doesn't seem to be a link to purchasing the
product from that store.
At least two people I know say Redhat is fairly well documented for someone
who is New to Linux and one of my support workers at Dewsbury College uses
Mandrake so as he knows more about Linux than me, this distribution is also
another possibility.
Could anyone please give me any advice?

Hi, Michael:

Before you buy a boxed set of Red Hat, you might want to take
some time to discover what it takes to get Red Hat installed and
working for a blind user. I humbly submit a document I coauthored
may assist. You can find it at:

http://www.linux-speakup.org/ftp/disks/redhat/HOWTO_INSTALL.html

This HOWTO does not cover absolutely every means of accessibly
obtaining and installing a Red Hat distribution because it is
focused on the Speakup screen reader, but it should help you--and
you may decide Speakup would be helpful.

This document will be phased out soon inasmuch as its contents
are now being merged into a more generalized HOWTO for Speakup.

Hi

Well I'm had a few problems so I don't know if anyone has dealt with
your enquiry.

But I'm here in the UK so I can help. Most people download their
GNU/Linux distributions. However you can buy from Cheapbytes.com and
they'll ship to the UK. But the main UK dealer is the Linux Emporium.
www.linuxemporum.co.uk

There are many local lugs Linux User Groups. We here in Northampton
have a very good one. Please visit http://www.northants.lug.org.uk

Your friend that uses Mandrake will be useful as Redhat and Mandrake are
rpm based distributions.

Did you realise that you could download talking Redhat from the speakup
site? But need a hardware synthesiser.

you might want to try contacting bill acker who's email and phone details
I've misplaced at the moment. however, someone might be able to provide
them for you as bill and a few others use red hat and they don't have any
problwms with it.
hth
Shaun.

Well, perhaps. But, how much of a pioneer are you? I'm suggesting
you'd be one of very few Suse users who are blind. Most of us
Debian, Slack, or Red Hat. That should tell you something, too.

Not to mention, SUSE is only accessible from an installation point of
view *if* one has a supported braille display. I dunno how it works
beyond that as I don't have *any* braille display, much less a
supported one.
